Movie Reviews of The Taming of the Shrew

Movie Review: Stunning
Summary: 5 Stars

I've seen many productions of Taming of the Shrew, but they all suffer from the curse of political correctness. Fortunately, Zeffirelli did not worry about this and has produced the finest Shrew of modern times. Like nearly all films of Shakespeare, at least half of the text is left out. However, the complete spirit is captured and that is the best one can hope for in a film version. Burton is quite good in this, but Elizabeth Taylor is incredible.

Movie Review: A dazzling presentation; a knock-out in every way.
Summary: 5 Stars

Burton and Taylor prove how wonderful Shakespeare can be in this totally magnificent film. While it is visually dazzling, magnificently costumed and set, it is in the language and its fantastic delivery that the strongest moments of this film reside. Some could say that Shakespeare is dated; but noone could say that in this awesome production. And Elizabeth Taylor's last major speech? Hang onto you hats---it is perfection

Movie Review: Only Love Tames the Shrew ....
Summary: 5 Stars

Turbulent star-crossed lovers Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton were the leads in this 1967 take on Taming of the Shrew. Taylor gives a fiesty performance as the one who won't be taken ... who cannot seem to give (to quote Bette Midler's The Rose) ... while Burton's ravishing maestro of a character is the (finally) successful shrew tamer. Comedy that tells us why only love can tame a shrew ...but for how long?

Movie Review: Want to hook kids on the comedy of Shakespeare?
Summary: 5 Stars

I use this version in a middle school classroom and the kids actually laugh at it like it was a modern day movie. It's a great idea to also show 10 Things I Hate About You to them. The story is the same and the kids actually realize that Shakespeare's stories are still told today. I like to have them list as many similarities as they can. They gain a new appreciation for the relevance of classic literature.

Movie Review: Taming of the Shrew
Summary: 5 Stars

Shakespeare himself would have been proud to view this outstanding production. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton are at their very best in this rendition of a very human tale that blends humor and pathos with a thoughtful reflection on relationships between the sexes. This will remain a long time favorite of mine, and I can say without qualification it is one of the best DVD investments I have ever made.
