Movie Reviews of The Taming of the Shrew

Movie Review: One Of The Absolutely Great Ones
Summary: 5 Stars

If you love Shakespeare this one has to be in your collection. The DVD version is nothing spectacular (no extra anythings) but it will probably keep forever now that it has been digitized.....so forget about the next generation in your family not being able to view the crumbling magnetic tape from your VHS copy.

A classic for-the-ages Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton film from their peak period in 1967. Directed by *the* Zeffirelli, what more could you ask for. Oh.....you want a good score....this one is award winning.....Nino Rota. There is absolutely nothing lacking in this version.....you can enjoy it every time. It's one for kids to watch to see how much fun real Shakespeare can be. It's one for budding actresses to watch to see Taylor at her best. It's one for anyone studying the Bard in school to have under their belt. And it's one for all the rest of us to enjoy again and again.

Movie Review: Taming of the Shrew is classic Shakespeare
Summary: 5 Stars

Although this version of the "Shrew" does not follow Shakespeare's original script verbatim, it is a wonderful retelling with a talented and knowledgeable cast. It is performed solely as the story of Katherine and Petruchio rather that as a play within a play to fool Christopher Sly. The few liberties taken with the script to aid the progress of the story for a film audience. The character portrayals are well rounded. Burton and Taylor are accomplished actors, renowned for their craft, and give dimension and pathos to their characters. The story line moves along well, and is entertaining and appropriate for ages 12 and older.

Movie Review: Burton and Taylor at their best
Summary: 5 Stars

If you're not a fan of Shakespeare's comedies, or a fan of Taylor and Burton, then seeing this flick will make you a fan of all three!

From the rainy opening scene, to the brilliantly played climax at the end when 'the Shrew' (Taylor) complies with her 'Lord and Master's (Burton) "order to come hither" the talent of the original play, the script and (of course) the actors shines through in every scene.

A more modern remake of this classic is "Ten thing I hate about you" - and I can heartily recommend that movie too!

Movie Review: The quintessential Catherine and Petrucio
Summary: 5 Stars

It is said that when the director was deciding who to play the parts of this Shakespeare comedy, he was visiting Elizabeth and Richard during one of their marital fights. He knew then who had to star in his production. His choice was perfect with Richard Burton as the light-hearted but firm Petrucio and Liz as the firey untamed sultress. This one will have you in stitches in short order while enjoying some of the most colorful lines of the english language. The quintessential Catherine and Petrucio.

Movie Review: The Taming of the Shrew
Summary: 5 Stars

One year before his outstanding adaptation of the Bard's "Romeo and Juliet", Zeffirelli displays all his buoyant energy and stylistic flair in making this venerable old comedy fresh and exciting. With the exception of Albee's "Virginia Woolf" made the prior year, on- and off-again spouses Taylor and Burton were never better teamed. A young Michael York and crafty Cyril Cusack stand out with veteran Hordern in a stellar supporting cast. Here's another Kate worth kissing.
