Movie Reviews of The SundownersMovie Review: The Sundowners Summary: 5 Stars
Wonderful scenery of Australia (where it was filmed) and a delightful story of a family moving sheep across the country. Ida, the wife, and her son want to settle down and buy a house. Paddy, the husband, likes the freedom of living off the land, sleeping in a tent and spending what money they have on beer and gambling. Robert Mitchum and Deborah Kerr are the stars and they are absolutely perfect in the roles. Their great working relationship reflects the fact that - in reality - they were very good friends. Peter Ustinov and Glynis Johns are superb in their supporting roles. This movie resulted in Deborah Kerr's 6th Academy Award nomination. Unfortunately, she did not win though she really deserved the Oscar. I loved this film.
Movie Review: The Sundowners Summary: 5 Stars
Filmed on location, this breezy Western from Down Under earned five Oscar nominations and has weathered well over the years as a mini epic about freedom and family bonds. Mitchum and Kerr square off nicely as hardworking but happily married roamers, and even manage to hold their Aussie accents in check most of the time. Peter Ustinov, playing a chipper ex-officer who comes to live with the Carmody family, provides some of the film's highest humor, especially in his flirtatious relationship with hotel owner Glynis Johns. What makes a man wander? ZInnemann's "Sundowners" provides no answers, but it's sure fun to tag along.
Movie Review: So glad this came to DVD Summary: 5 Stars
Over the years I've seen this film at least 10 times, and every time I watch it I'm overwhelmed with the same warmth and happiness I experienced the first time. This is a good, clean, happy movie. You come to appreciate and care about all the characters. I agree with one reviewer who called this a life affirming movie. It is indeed. I've seen it many times before but only on VHS tape. That wasn't bad, but DVD has made it so much nicer. Buy it, rent it, borrow it, or see it if it ever comes on T.V., but for God's sake, see it. Deborah Kerr, Peter Ustinov, Robert Mitchum...how COULD you go wrong?

Ordered on 14 June 2009 and received on 28 June 2009, a month earlier than I expected it. Fabulous old movie. Perfect picture and colour on Samsung DVD Player, but perfect picture but black and white on Rank Arena DVD Player. Not a problem for fans of the B & W genre. Great to see the established actors and the then-upcomers wearing their "young" faces. Thoroughly enjoyable and recommend to other fans of the "golden oldies", they made wonderful classic movies back then that hold their age well.
Movie Review: The Sundowners. Summary: 5 Stars
Had seen this picture when it was first released in 1960, I was 21 yrs at the time.I enjoyed it then and wanted to have another look all these years later. I was not disapointed as I found it everything that I had remembered. A first rate story, convincing acting and a pretty look at my country and it's ways. For a 50 yr old picture it will hold interest and entertainment for all the family. However being an aussie I may show a little bias.
