Movie Reviews of The Sugarland Express

Movie Review: A Good Movie!.
Summary: 4 Stars

I first saw The Sugarland Express when I was eight years old and I liked this movie and I enjoyed the chase scenes and the acting from the entire cast was good especially Goldie Hawn and I highly recommend this movie!

Movie Review: Spielberg does "Smokey and the Bandit"
Summary: 3 Stars

I made a point to watch "The Sugarland Express" because it was listed in "The New York Times Guide to the Best 1000 Movies Ever Made". I kept looking for a reason why but the only thing I could accept was that this is Steven Spielberg's first movie. That wasn't good enough for me. The sets might have been good, the acting acceptable, special effects alright, and the color well-done but this is still a mediocre movie.

"The Sugarland Express" is apparently based on a true story. My guess is that 10% may have been for real but the other 90% fiction destroys the case for this "victimized" couple. Their goal is to break papa out of prison to get baby back from the County Foster Care program. After watching the antics of mom and pop, reuniting them with junior would constitute child abuse. After watching the highway patrol's allocation of "necessary force" I felt a renewed respect for the Keystone Kops. I was never sure if this was supposed to be a comedy. I was guessing it was but, then, why the supposed morality tale. Oh well, don't shoot the director, he was meant for bigger (much bigger) and better (much better) things. Apparently he learned from his mistakes.

Movie Review: not the best
Summary: 3 Stars

I love Goldie Hawn but this movie was certainly not her best.

Movie Review: Sluggish Express
Summary: 2 Stars

This film's distinction is that it was the feature film debut of Steven Spielberg's illustrious career. That's about the only thing distinctive about it. Ostensibly, the movie is about a fugitive couple on the run from the law trying to get their baby back from court-appointed foster parents. The movie really seems more concerned about tracking shots. The film's weak point is the script. The story isn't really fleshed out except for a lot of car-chase scenes. The Texans portrayed in this film seem stereotyped and buffoonish in part. At times I was flashing back to "1941", Spielberg's film most notorious for it's excesses. The actors in this film don't seem to be able to overcome the weak screenplay. Goldie Hawn reverts to her grating ditzy blonde stereotype to compensate for these weaknesses. The most complex character in the film is a captain in the Texas Rangers played ably by veteran Ben Johnson but, alas, the need for closure of the story betrays his character in the end. A better reference point for Spielberg fans is "Duel", the telemovie that he directed superbly on a much smaller scale than this larger budgeted mess.
