Movie Review: Dexter's Adventures Just Get Better and Better!
Summary: 5 Stars
Kurt Russell returns for a third and final outing as Disney's frequently, accidentally super-powered college student, Dexter Riley. This time, Dexter and his science buddies stumble onto a strength formula that could save the jobs of Dean Higgins and Professor Quigley, IF Higgins can finagle a deal with a breakfast cereal mogul for a big payoff. However, there is a spy in the ranks at the Crumply Crunch corporation, and he has enlisted the help of recently released from prison A.J. Arno to swing things in favor of the competition. The finale is a big weightlifting tournament where anything can happen, and it does!
The laughs are stronger than ever in this last installment of Disney's Dexter Riley film series, 1975's "The Strongest Man in the World". Key cast members return to reprise their roles, including Joe Flynn as the hilariously frustrated Dean Higgins, William Schallert as humble Professor Quigley, Michael McGreevey as goofy student Schuyler, and Caesar Romero and Dick Backalyan as Dexter's old enemies, A.J. Arno and sidekick Cookie. And, of course, Dexter himself, Kurt Russell, is back on the scene! The only disappointment is that absolute goddess Joyce Menges does not return this time as Debbie. Instead, she is replaced by another actress. Heartbreaking for me, I must say, but the cast is still excellent and fall back into their classic characters without missing a beat. Plus, there are some great new cast members this time around, like Eve Arden, Phil Silvers, and Dick Van Patten, all of whom play some very funny new characters from the world of the breakfast cereal business. The story here is wacky, but as good as any of the others, though this one goes for the comedy side more than ever (and succeeds). So, if you loved the other two films, especially the humor, you should love this one just as much!
This DVD release of "The Strongest Man in the World" is welcome, but not without its major negatives. What are the two worst issues a DVD can have besides poor picture and sound (or some sort of censorship)? That's right, this feature film is presented in full screen here, plus, there are zero extras. Nevertheless, if you have any interest in exploring Disney live-action, this whole trilogy is among the must-sees. Despite being from the much-maligned era of Disney 70's comedies, the Dexter Riley trilogy manages to be among the true greats of the Disney live-action library. Each entry has its own strengths, but this one will make you laugh the most!

Once again Dexter Riley (a young Kurt Russell) and his science lab pals astound and confound Medfield College's head dean when their latest concoction might either save the struggling institution from bankruptcy or get the top-level staff fired. In this third of the four Medfield films, Riley accidentally ingests a vitamin compound that gives him superhuman strength, leading to sponsorship by a cereal company and possible defeat of a rival university in a weightlifting contest. Although today Medfield's team would be disqualified for drug use, in this pre-steroid scandal picture it's the scheming adults who are the bad guys. Thanks to a Medfield Board of Directors traitor (an amusingly villainous Dick Van Patten), the competing sponsor sends a couple of bungling burglars (one played by Cesar Romero) to steal the formula. Kidnapping, hypnosis, and a down-to-the-wire weightlifting finale mark this 92-minute, G-rated film, which is short on subtlety but long on wholesomeness. Kids as young as 4 will enjoy the weightlifting and burglary antics, but the school politics and corporate warfare subplots will lose them temporarily. --Kimberly Heinrichs
