Movie Review: The Story of Ruth Summary: 5 StarsI have been waiting for a long time for this film to be available on DVD. My favorite Book of the Bible , this clever rendition of the story is beautifully done, surprisingly true to the original story and the actors do a wonderful job.
Movie Review: Michael Robiolio Summary: 1 StarsThis film significantly distorts the biblical story of Ruth. It makes up significant history that is not pertinent to the story and it changes the characters relationships and personalities. Ruth is not the same person as in the bible. While the book of Ruth is short and no doubt would require "filling in" in order to make a good movie, this movie is not written to tell the bible story or message, but rather to make a romantic 1960's movie with a female personality model of strength from the 1960's. As such I would strongly not recommend it to anyone hoping to make a part of the bible come alive on film.
Additionally, unlike the Ten Commandments which also took license as with the romantic involvement of Moses, this movie is slow and not very engaging. My children and I who often like to watch "Bible movies" could not even get through this one all the way and kept pressing fastforward to try and get to a good part. When we got to the part when Ruth meets Boaz it was so distorted that we had to give it up.
The acting is resonable for the time period, hence it earns one star.
Don't buy this film UNLESS you don't care that it is nothing like the Biblical Ruth story and enjoy 1960 style movies.
Movie Review: Back when they knew how to do a Biblical Epic Summary: 3 StarsThe film takes the storyline of the Ruth from the Bible and fills it with lavish costumes and sets. The Moab temple scenes, the outfits worn by the cult they worshipped, etc. are all well done. The acting was all good, although it was surprising to see the actor who played Sergeant Schultz in Hogan's Heroes playing the King of Moab in this film. It was even more jarring to realize that he doesn't sound anything like his character on TV.
The only reason this movie doesn't get a higher rating is that it just never seems to "take off" or to pace itself. Nevertheless, definitely worth watching.
