Movie Reviews of The StingMovie Review: Yeah, but who's conning who? Summary: 5 Stars
Impossible to review without giving away the plot...so I won't. But if you've never seen it, DO NOT MISS a single line of dialogue! The movie is about Redford/Newman setting up the "big con" con on nefarious villain Robert Shaw. So much for the plot...the fun is how they get there. Almost every plot thread in the movie involves some kind of con, but since you're never really sure who's "the mark" these threads continue to pile up towards the conclusion and weave together perfectly for a real "Holy S--t!" ending. But, don't try to guess what's going on...turn out the lights, grab some popcorn, get some friends and prepare to laugh and cheer for over two hours. Ignore all the criticisms in the previous reviews, they're minor complaints and, while some are valid, are just too picky. (Almost "show-offy" in my humble opinion.) You can't NOT have fun with this one.
Movie Review: One of the best all-time con game films ever Summary: 5 Stars
Hooker (Redford) is a small-time confidence man working with his mentor and partner, Luther (Jones). By accident, they sting a runner for Irish crime boss Doyle Lonnegan (Shaw). Luther's killed just after he tells his protege he's getting out of the game and to head for the big-time with Henry Gondorff (Newman).
The rest of the film is an elaborate and often hilarious confidence game on the part of Hooker and Gondorff to 'sting' Lonnegan in revenge for Luther's death. The soundtrack's ragtime from the incomparable Scott Joplin.
Director George Roy Hill did an excellent job bringing this cast together and creating a masterfully acted and timed film. "The Sting" won 7 Academy Awards in 1973 and is still very much worth watching. We just recently bought the film on DVD so we could get rid of the VHS and it was very much worth the investment.

Movie Review: A Quintessential American Movie Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of the most entertaining movies to come out of the "Golden Age" of American cinema, if not one of the greatest. Thoughtful, quick witted, and authentic, this unpretentious caper is one of the few films that can be watched time after time without becoming tiresome. Beyond the effortless charisma of stars Paul Newman and Robert Redford, there are delightful supporting performances by the likes of Ray Walston, Charles Durning, Eileen Brennan, and, of course, Robert Shaw (ya falla?). The Chicago of 1936 presented is both mythic and realistic, with detail down to blue plates for the blue plate specials, and authentic green glassware. This film will be a delight for both young and old. My main issue with the DVD release is that it is full frame only. I think a film with this much critical and financial success deserves a widescreen release. How about it, Universal?
Movie Review: The Ultimate Con Summary: 5 Stars
This movie ranks up there as one of the best films ever made and stands up well over the years.
Robert Redford, Paul Newman and Robert Shaw (who I always think of being an underated actor and the performance here and in Jaws show how great he was) all bring A-List performances to the movie.
The cinematography and look of the film adds to the atmosphere and is brilliant, while "The Entertainer" by Joplin adds to the feel of the movie.
And of course there is the plot itself. The planning, twists and turns of the con of the conman stand up on repeat viewings and letting some time pass between the viewings helps make the nuances stand up on repeat viewings regardless of whether you are able to remember the overall plot or conclusion - in other words it is one of the films that you can see over and over.
Highly recommended.
Movie Review: Hilarious. Wonderful film. Summary: 5 Stars
Summary: Johnny Hooker (Robert Redford) is a small scale hustler who gets caught up with a big time mob boss, Doyle Lonnegan (Robert Shaw), when one of Johnny's scams takes some of Doyle's money. Doyle wants to teach the hustlers a lesson and orders them killed. Johnny's partner, Luther Coleman (Robert Earl Jones), is killed and Johnny has to skip town. Johnny ends up hooking up with Henry Gondorff (Paul Newman) and they set up an elaborate 'sting' to get Doyle Lonnegan for $500,000.My Comments: The movie is about as perfect as they come. The twists are convincing and the action is never far between. Robert Redford and Paul Newman are superb. What more can you say about a great movie. Final comment, whenever I hear The Entertainer by Joplin, I think about The Sting and laugh. One of my favorite movies of all time.
