Movie Reviews of The Statler Brothers: Farewell ConcertMovie Review: Great Farewell for a Great Group Summary: 5 Stars
I became a Statler Brothers fan many years ago when a co-worker brought in an 8-track (yes, I said MANY years ago!) tape and I ended up listening to it over and over. Since then, I have purchased cassettes, then CDs, even re-mixed a few disks of my own, and so I was saddened to hear the group was retiring. Long story short, my respect for the quartet has only deepened since their departure and their music sounds even better today.
How wonderful that they allowed crew to film their final concert--and how wonderful a concert it was! I was not expecting to be so entertained. It isn't the most polished video tribute to come down the line, but it really fills the bill for fans who miss hearing the banter and the tight harmonies that marked this group. It contains a little of this and a little of that, but it's a good compilation of songs with almost every classic Statler Brothers hit included. The more you know the Statlers, the more you'll enjoy having this concert in your collection.
I've spent a lot on music over the years. This was money well spent.
Movie Review: A Sad Goodbye--A Tremendous Concert on DVD Summary: 5 Stars
From the first time I heard the Statlers Brothers back in the late sixties early seventies they have and always will be my favorite group. This DVD is their final concert before going into what has to be considered an early retirement. Their remarkable 40 year career is capped off with perhaps their best performance ever. Harold and Phil were approaching their mid-sixties, Don 57, Jimmy a young 47-but it was as if they were still all in their twenties. They left their hearts and souls out on the stage that night, and everyone who was there at the concert and anyone who watches this DVD are left wanting more and believing they still have another 40 years to give. I said earlier they have always been my favorite "group", not "country group", because their music transcends the often muddy borders of the different musical genres, something clearly brought out in this concert. If you are at all a fan of the Statler Brothers, do not miss out on this one. Buy this DVD, there is no way you will be sorry.
Movie Review: Chalk one up for the Good Ole Boys! Summary: 5 Stars
It was their last performance together and it proved to be a night of great music and intense emotion as they put everything they had into each song. Longwinded so-so intro by Jimmy Dean but after that it was the guys' night in all their glory! They explained why they were retiring...had some laughs...and then later on did a heartfelt thank you to many they have known over the years. They also got personal talking about their kids then honored their wives with a special thank you, and we get to see them! They ended singing their favorite hymns. Powerful!! Don't miss it!! I highly recommend!
Movie Review: Excellent Summary: 5 Stars
The DVD, which was recorded in Salem, Virginia, is the good-bye to touring performance by the legendary Statler Brothers. If you like the Statlers, this is a must buy. If you don't, consider the purchase, for it gives a very good introduction to the group, which is one of the most decorated in country music history, and may well be the best four part harmony group in recording history.
All-in-all, a great presentation from four great American entertainers.
Highest rating possible from me.
