Movie Reviews of The Spanish Prisoner

Movie Review: sublety on parade
Summary: 5 Stars

David mamet has to be considered one the most talented and intelligent American writer/directors of the modern era.In the Spanish Prisoner he's crafted a suspenseful, smoldering, highly entertaining film with no special fx,loud music, nudity, bodily fluids,or foul language(there is,but it's used sparingly). It's shocking that there is a director, who still can get films financed, who doesn't pander or condescend to the audience. He's unwilling to follow the money and insult the viewers intelligence. He's crafted an intricate masterpiece of a puzzle that could be potentially ruined if i even give you a hint of what it's about.I will say that Campbell Scott as a young enterprising inventor is a revelation. Why this guy isn't more popular is beyond me,he has talent to burn.Steve martin steals scenes, not because he acts like a bufoon, but because he's so subdued and in command.Rebbeca Pidgeon burns holes through the screen as the loyal secretary, and she never sheds her clothes. There are no holes in the casting, the supporting cast is solid from top to bottom. There is nothing more to say except that you should see this film,if only to see how films can and should be made. It's the furthest thing from Everybody Loves Mary or whatever that monstrosity of celluloid was by the Farrelly duo.

Movie Review: trust no one
Summary: 5 Stars

If you enjoy movies about bone-deep lies and deception, where you do not know until the very end what really happened (and even then you have some lingering doubts), then you will love this movie. The acting is top-notch and the writing terrific: every line of dialogue is significant, but, of course, you don't know why until much later.

If you liked The Manchurian Candidate (Special Edition), Nine Queens, The Usual Suspects (Special Editon) or Diabolique (Criterion Collection Spine #35), this one is for you.

Movie Review: great mystery on par with the Usual Suspects and The Game
Summary: 5 Stars

Hi,

This movie was sort of a sleeper hit. Nobody I know has seen it or even heard of it. It is a very clever mystery movie. It keeps you wondering who the people on the level are and you really feel for what is happening to the main character. If you have ever seen the movie "The Game" there are clues during the movie that can clue you in along but watching it for the first time I doubt you will figure it out until the ending. Just like the "Usual Suspects". Very good movie with clever writing that I feel every word develops the movie and is needed to develop the movie, none is wasted. The acting was also top notch. Steve Martin gives a good dramatic performance in a small role.

Highly recomended.

Also there is no curse words or objectionable material. So recommended for families with children old enough to stay with the plot.

Movie Review: Most analyzed movie since 2001!
Summary: 5 Stars

Not since 2001 (released in 1968) has a movie caused as much "post-viewing" discussion. The main point of contention: Was Rebecca Pidgeon's character really "a bad person?" Ms. Pidgeon brings us a most refreshing new character: "Anne of Green Gables" has become a cagey operative! (And every word from her pretty mouth is calculated for effect.) Academy Award stuff to be sure! All we really know for a fact is that "CEO" Ben Gazzara is evil. From that point, keep in mind Mr. Mamet's simple observation: "People aren't always what they seem to be." There had to be at least one "good guy" insider in Gazarra's company! The ferry boat scene at the end is pure genius. Is "Agent" Rebecca overplaying her role within her role? We think so. And remarklably well! Oscars all around!

Movie Review: One of better recent mysteries
Summary: 5 Stars

The Spanish Prisoner is in a league of its own. Not only is it one of the better mysteries of the decade, but it also achieves such without violence, sex, or profanity. Not that I'm against those mind you, as long as they are there to benefit the plot, and not just for show. What I mean to say rather, that it is astonishing to watch such an absorbing film, and then by the end of it all realize that it did it without traits mentioned above. Much like the Usual Suspects, this film plays with your mind. You are taken on a rollercoaster. Who can you trust? The acting is dead on perfect. Campell Scott is good as the unexciting man in the middle of it all. And believe it or not Steve Martin is perfect in his role. So if you're looking for a good brainteaser, I reccomend this one. Also, look for a cameo by Ed O'Neil, better known as TV's Al Bundy.
