Movie Reviews of The Sorrow and the PityMovie Review: Amazing. This film will astound you. Summary: 5 Stars
I have watched other films/documetaries about WWII, but this film gives you the story from a unique angle - from the point of view of the French people who were under occupation. We hear accounts from people of all walks of life, describing their situations and circumstances and how the events affected them. Some contradict others, but taking the movie as a whole, you get a pretty accurate account of what life was like.Highly Recommended. The price of the DVD may seem a little off putting, but unfortunately, due to its limited availablity, it seems the only way to see it is to buy it. Do what I did, buy it, watch it, then sell it on.
Movie Review: The Sorrow and the Pity Summary: 5 Stars
A milestone of documentary film-making, "Sorrow" captures this devastating period in France's history in painfully frank, unblinking terms, and provides no easy answers, just as there were none at the time. The French people had no choice but to adapt to this oppressive new social order, since rebellion or escape was a life-or-death proposition. So, were the collaborators as guilty as the occupiers? And were those that rebelled really that heroic, if it meant their families would also suffer for their death and betrayal of the occupying forces? Watch this unnerving masterpiece, and reach your own conclusions.
Movie Review: A critical view of Vichy France Summary: 5 Stars
This is a 4 1/2 hour documentary, directed by Marcel Ophuls, about France during the occupation in WW II. Most of the movie consists of interviews with French people about their roles during the war and what life was like then; it does a lot of debunking of the French Resistance, showing most people resigning themselves to the Nazis in order to survive: no sign of great heroics here. Obviously, this caused much controversy when the film came out. Despite its length and format, the movie is never dull. A most interesting documentary.
Movie Review: 3.5 stars out of 4 Summary: 5 Stars
The Bottom Line:
A documentary so ambitious and sucessful that it puts efforts like Fahrenheit 9/11 to shame, The Sorrow and the Pity is a fascinating (if long) account of the French occupation as seen through the lens of the town of Clermont-Ferraud; the film that helped destroy the myth of universal French Resistance, TSatP is recommended to any history or cinema buff.
Movie Review: The Greatest Films Don't Need "Extras" Summary: 5 Stars
... this is one of the greatest films of all time. The DVD features a decent transfer; the film looks better than it has in decades. The quality of that transfer, and the brilliance of the film itself, more than justifies the cost. ...Lesser movies can be improved through DVD extras; a great movie like this one can stand on its own.
