Movie Reviews of The Song of Bernadette

Movie Review: Thank you Bernadette. Please pray for us.
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie was great. Jennifer Jones was perfect in the role, deserving of the Oscar she won for it. I don't know for sure how historically accurate all the lines are, but I do know that Bernadette was a very humble girl, and that is really powerful. My favorite line is when she is listening to Sister Marie-Thérese tell her why she has never been able to believe the story of her visions, and Bernadette says, "I don't know why I was chosen - You are a hundred times more worthy."

After all Bernadette had been through, and after the way Sister Marie-Thérese had always treated her, I think for her to say something like that with such deep sincerity was real true humility.

Movie Review: One of the best
Summary: 5 Stars

I recently saw this movie again and think it is a beautifully made film. Her performance couldn't be bettered. I can't imagine any other actress from the time doing it. There is not a false note to it. I think it is one of the classic film performances. The truthfulness and the simplicity are just remarkable. The cast that surrounds it is just top notch from Anne Revere to Gladys Cooper among others. Plus it is a beautifully photographed film. There are many shots that could stand alone as photographs on your wall. And the score is simply wonderful. This is a very satisfying and moving film that holds up after repeated viewings. If she could win only one Oscar, she got it for the right one.

Movie Review: Song of Bernadette
Summary: 5 Stars

Franz Werfel's fictionalized 1942 book, The Song of Bernadette, was made into this memorable motion picture in 1943, introducing Jennifer Jones, who plays the humble and innocent young visionary, Bernadette Soubirous. Bernadette saw the Blessed Virgin Mary in a Cova in Lourdes, France in 1858. In 1933 Bernadette was canonized a saint by the Catholic Church. Having enjoyed the book first and then having seen the movie, I continue to find this story of Bernadette a moving experience. Jennifer Jones received the Academy Award as Best Actress for her inspiring performance. The Song of Bernadette

Movie Review: The Song of Bernadette
Summary: 5 Stars

It is hard to overstate just how respectfully and reverentially director King handles the details of the Lourdes legend, in which the Virgin (played here by an uncredited Linda Darnell) is said to have appeared to a sickly peasant girl, through whom she conveyed her message of love. That's because he treats the story as fact, depicting Bernadette's divine encounters as wholly natural rather than fantastic. Jones is radiant as the scapegoated Bernadette, and won an Oscar for her effort. Price is wonderful, too, as the withering voice of reason. If you're in need of heavenly grace, lay hands on the ecstatic "Song."

Movie Review: Wonderful Faith-filled Movie
Summary: 5 Stars

My whole family just finished watching "The Song of Bernadette" - the great classic movie staring Jennifer Jones which tells the story of St. Bernadette, a young peasant girl who was chosen by God to see the Blessed Mother at Lourdes. I had read the story of St. Bernadette to my two boys (ages 7 and 6) a while ago so they knew the general plot and they really did enjoy the movie. My six-year old even cried at the end when St. Bernadette died. My husband and I had seen it before, but it had been a long time. It was definitely worth a second look. It is a great, faith-inspiring story.
