Movie Reviews of The Song of BernadetteMovie Review: Excelente Película!! Summary: 5 Stars
Movie Review: Beautiful Move and Beautiful Story Summary: 5 Stars
I can't really add much more than other reviewers have said. I caught part of this movie late one night and was enchanted by it. Later I had to go find a copy of the VHS to see the whole story. I had heard Bette Midler's "Song of Bernadette" and it caught my curiousity.
True, as some have pointed out, some of the facts about Bernadette, her life, and her family have been altered by the film. I don't believe that they take away from the story. I think the importance of the story is in the message, not that all the facts were true.
I'm not a religious person, but I found the movie and story of Bernadette to be very moving.
I would recommend it to anyone who wants to watch a beautifully filmed, inspirational story. Also, check out Franz Werfel's book "The Song of Bernadette" the movie was based on it.
Movie Review: My review of the DVD "The Song Of Bernadette". Summary: 5 Stars
My review of the DVD "The Song Of Bernadette".
"The Song Of Bernadette", Starring: Jennifer Jones, Charles Bickford, Gladys Cooper, William Eythe, Vincent Price, Lee J. Cobb, Anne Revere, and Roman Bohnen is one of the best movies that I have seen on DVD.
Jennifer Jones plays Bernadette an asthmatic 19th-century French girl that sees the Virgin Mary at a grotto in Lourdes. A lot of pressure was put upon Bernadette to not share her visions by powerful people in the community that Bernadette lived in. Every actor and actress in this movie plays their part better than I would have imagined and contributes to making this a great movie.
After you watch this movie you will be convinced that Bernadette is a Saint and you will be glad you watched this movie.
Movie Review: A wonderful story Summary: 5 Stars
They just don't make movies like this any more! I remember walking downtown with my classmates from St. Mary's grade school to watch this movie at a special theater showing for our Catholic school in the late 1950's. It was remarkable then as a testament to true faith and still is today. I never tire of watching this film and am very happy that a DVD edition is available. I can't imagine an all star cast of Hollywood stars of today making a moving film about true Christian faith. That is a sad statement as to how we have "progressed" over the years. Unfortunately, not all progress is good. Back to the film - If you want to show your kids or grandkids a great story about true Christian faith and how miracles really happened, get this video!
Movie Review: Universal Thematic Appeal Summary: 5 Stars
The Song of Bernadette begins with the classic quote, "For those who believe in God, no explanation is necesary. For those who don't, no explanation is possible."That having been said, one need not be religious to enjoy this film. What makes the movie so enjoyable is that it contains man's universal struggle with religion and his sense of meaning. Vincent Price does an excellent job of portraying the fatalistic expert, while Church officials are accurately protrayed as questioners - but not outright denyers - of the possibility of miraculous events. Jennifer Jones is fantastic, and accurately portrays the reported humble nature of St. Bernadette. Definitely one to see at least once.
