Movie Reviews of The Song of BernadetteMovie Review: a beautiful and compelling religious drama....... Summary: 5 Stars
The Song of Bernadette is a wonderful introduction to the beautiful and talented Jennifer Jones, cast as the lead character, Bernadette Scubirous, a young and sickly girl from Lourdes, France, who has a visitation with a beautiful lady, presumably the Virgin Mary (played by Linda Darnell). The town at first thinks she is crazy, and what's more, discredits her because she is considered the town half-wit and is too sickly to reason. Eventually, the town and her own family come to find that Bernadette really was experiencing this visitation for a reason, because from this encounter came the arrival of the (now famous) spring of Lourdes, known for its healing powers. Not only is Bernadette cured of her asthma, through her encounter with the spring, but numerous others flock to it and are cured of their ailments.
This is a beautifully told drama, and is based on the true story of Bernadette, a young girl who grew up in the mid to late 1700s in Lourdes. The great power of this film lies in Jennifer Jones' wonderful, wide eyed innocence and beauty (which won her a Best Actress Academy Award, along with three others for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography and Best Musical Score). This is one of the finest and most well made religious films I have seen. I definitely reccomend it.......
Movie Review: The Song of Bernadette Summary: 5 Stars
Even though I'm a non-Catholic, I find "The Song of Bernadette" a deeply moving film; it's one of the treasures of my collection. The film wisely covers all the arguments regarding Bernadette's visions, the production values are superb and the acting is wonderful throughout, especially Lee J. Cobb as Dr. Dozous, Vincent Price as imperial prosecutor Vital Dutour, and Gladys Cooper as Sister Marie-Therese Vauzous. I am aware that Jennifer Jones won the Academy Award for her work in the title role, but, in my opinion, she plays Bernadette Soubirous as so sweet and wide-eyed that it threatens to make the character a cardboard cut-out. The real Bernadette had a lot more personality in life, and in Franz Werfel's novel which I also own. In fact, after she joined the convent of the Sisters of Charity of Nevers, Bernadette, who took the name of Sister Marie-Bernarde, was hardly a sad, wistful figure; she was known for her warmth and her sprightly sense of humor. It's too bad that neither the scriptwriter nor the director saw fit to add those traits to Jennifer Jones's performance. It would have made her Bernadette a much more-rounded character, and Jones's overall performance that much better.
Movie Review: Awe Inspiring Summary: 5 Stars
There's no use repeating the synopsis, as that's been done wonderfully well by others. But, it's worth saying again what a cinematic masterpiece this film is. I've seen this movie at least 25 times, and it becomes more awe inspiring with each viewing, because the more you see it, the more you want to see it. A five star rating is simply insufficient.
Beautifully acted, marvelously directed, and wonderfully written, "The Song of Bernadette" will thrill and inspire you. If you ever wondered what a real saint looked and acted like, Jennifer Jones' incredible portrayal of Bernadette will demonstrate that to you. The music alone will take you on a journey of wonder. The heartbreaking but beautifully moving ending scene will cause you to look at yourself and the world differently, if only for a few moments.
Like the opening title says: "For those who believe in God, no explanation is necessary; for those who don't believe in God, no explanation is possible." If you are a believer, this film will only strengthen your faith. If you are straddling the fence or just want to be able to believe, after watching this beautiful and fact-based film, you will.
Movie Review: A Classic Film Summary: 5 Stars
This movie is a evergreen Classic. Splendid direction, music, editing, set design, and casting. This is what every Christian film director should try to learn from. Bernadette is portrayed as a normal girl with desires and dreams of a girl her age. The Catholic Church is portrayed realistically, (something so rare in Hollywood), they are skeptical of the apparitions at first. This movie doesn't over do it. Everything in this movie is perfect. I do not know if anyone can point to a single error in this film.
The director doesn't take liberties in portraying Bernadette, he portrays her just as historical facts witness.
One scene I found missing in the DVD is the blooming of the roses in the Dean's garden. Somehow this scene has been left out. It is this miracle that makes the Dean believe in the authenticity of the apparitions and approach the Bishop for an Episcopal Commission to investigate the apparitions.
Movie Review: "I Must Keep My Promise To The Lady" ~ Encountering The Heavenly Fire Summary: 5 Stars
I absolutely love the '43 film 'The Song of Bernadette'. Jennifer Jones is magnificent in the role of the naive, but intuitive young Bernadette who was graced with a series of 18 visions of a beautiful Maiden from Heaven who identified herself as the "Immaculate Conception". Everything works to perfection in this film; production values, music and cast as well as providing an honest re-telling of the events that begun on February 11, 1858.
Unlike the several other films on the life and visions of Bernadette that were produced in the years to follow, this version is the only one that chose to actually show the vision to the audience rather than rely on the ecstatic expression of the young seer to convey the presence of the "Lady in White". I must say the director made the right decision in this matter and pulled it off beautifully.
You don't have to be a Catholic to recognize a classic when you see one!
