Movie Reviews of The Simpsons Movie (Widescreen Edition)

Movie Review: Now THIS'LL teach you to laugh at something that's funny !!!
Summary: 5 Stars

The Simpsons Movie features excellent animation, a good plot that moves along very well, great gags and awesome voiceovers by the cast. There are so many gags that there's bound to be jokes in this movie that will amuse just about anyone!

The action starts when Lake Springfield is practically destroyed by excessive pollution; and so the town must clean it up. They do! Unfortunately, however, things don't stay that way--and there begins the REAL plot of this film. Homer (voiced by Dan Castellaneta) decides to take on a pig for a house pet. When Marge (voiced by Julie Kavner) casually asks Homer what he's doing with the pig's "leavings;" Homer takes Marge out back and shows her his "silo" full of pig "droppings." Marge isn't too happy; and eventually Homer realizes he MUST get rid of the festering silo. Naturally, where does Homer go to get rid of the silo? Lake Springfield! Once again the lake is unbelievably contaminated.

Russ Cargill (voiced by Albert Brooks) is in charge of the EPA and he sets out to rectify the problem. What happens? Springfield is enwrapped by a huge, impenetrable dome--and then wiped off the map. The residents of Springfield are furious at Homer; and sooner rather than later The Simpsons must flee. They go to Alaska in search of freedom from the infuriated residents of Springfield.

Worse yet, Russ Cargill and President Schwarzenegger (voiced by Harry Shearer) hatch a plan to bomb Springfield so that it will never again pose a problem. This really raises the stakes.

From here the plot can go anywhere. What will Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie do? Will they stay in Alaska where it's safe or will they return to Springfield to try to rescue the people there from being killed by the bomb? Will Homer and Marge's marriage be tested by all this strife? What will Bart think of Homer after this all becomes one huge mess? No plot spoilers here, folks--you'll just have to watch the movie to find out!

The animation couldn't be better. I was very impressed by the clarity and the sharpness of the images and colors. The voiceovers were outstanding as well. It seems like Matt Groening, director David Silverman and their crew can do no wrong.

In addition, the DVD comes loaded with a plethora of extras considering this is all on one single DVD. There are several deleted scenes; and there's a very funny but brief extra entitled "Let's All Go To The Lobby." There are two commentaries for you to enjoy if you wish; and there are great gags all the way through the ending credits.

Overall, The Simpsons Movie is definitely one of the best comedies of 2007. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Fans of The Simpsons will want this in their collections; and even people less familiar with The Simpsons television show will find great entertainment and many jokes here!

Movie Review: An extended episode
Summary: 4 Stars

Who can resist the antics of our best loved animated dysfunctional family? The movie played like an extended version of an episode of the tv show. You can tell it took several years to create the movie as there are no mentions of current events. Recommended for the whole family, even grandma.

Movie Review: Surprisingly entertaining
Summary: 4 Stars

I've enjoyed the Simpsons from back in the fledgling days of the Fox network, which used to show edgy, interesting and different programming like the "Tracey Ullman Show," instead of "When Animals Attack 10". The Simpsons used to be a short each week on the "Tracey Ullman Show," and were one of my favorite features. When the Simpsons got their own show, I watched it for years, giving up only at the beginning of the fall 2007 season after 20 years of watching.

I didn't expect much from this movie, because I haven't expected much from the TV show lately. Perhaps they've been saving their best writing and best comedy for this movie, because it rings more true to the middle-era Simpsons than to the most recent incarnation. "The Simpsons Movie" is actually funny, and has an appropriate running length. Most comedies really need to be 90 minutes or less to keep from collapsing under their own weight, and the producers of this one manage to hold the movie under that magic number - no small feat given the sheer number of characters and plots that could have been explored. The movie echoes the episode where Mr. Burns blocks out the sun, but still manages to be original and interesting in the wake of 20 years of material.

This movie is worth at least a rent, even for casual Simpsons fans.

Movie Review: If Only I Could Give It 10
Summary: 5 Stars

This film was bound to get mixed thoughts and reviews from those who were fans of old and hate the new generation Simpsons. After about Season 10 the simpsons simply slid into comic oblivion as most episodes simply lost that making fun of popculture intelligence that made it famous. One reason as to why the Simpsons series may have lost its comic touch is the loss of what could be argued as its best writers like Mike Reiss. Or the loss of its early years producers like John Swartzwelder or Jon Viti. These returned to add their classic touch to this movie and it's blatantly obvious that they played a massive part in this film.

To be honest all the blame can be issued out to anyone about the slow and painful downfall of the Simpsons series, but it's simply something that was inevitable. When you have a series that runs as long as the Simpsons, it's bound to take a slide. The Movie, however, picks up were around season 10 left off when it comes to comedic intelligence or satiring pop culture. This movies hot topic is the environment and how hysterical some people have become over the whole issue.

Most TV series such as the Family Guy Movie could be described as just 2 or 3 episodes planted together, and that was certainly the expectation when I first went into watching this film. I was very much surprised to see that it was nothing of the sort, it was as if it had started from scratch and gave us a true feature length movie that carried smoothly from start to finish. This left no stone un-turned when it came to making a mockery, politics, celebrities, the environment, religion, everything was made fun of in one way or another, in this movie and it was truly something that made me reminisce about the good ol' days.

The animation has obviously received an upgrade, much like every other TV to Movie cartoon series as it seems to be a healthy mixture of both CG and conventional animation. I honestly wish this was just something they could incorporate into the series as it would make it look a whole lot better. The voice acting is the typical great voice acting that we've come to expect from the Simpsons cast, adding on a few cameos of Green Day and Tom Hanks as the typical celebrity inclusion. I'm actually surprised they never had more of a celebrity influence in the movie considering they have a celeb in almost every episode. I would have enjoyed a cameo from Arnold Schwarzenegger as President Schwarzenegger.

The story is quite zaney and does what the original Simpsons did best and that's take an unreal story and have each character become included in their own way that perfectly matches their classic personality. Homer is obviously the catalyst that leads to the whole town buying for his blood. Lisa is obviously the morale side of the family trying to keep it all together alongside Marge. Bart also is the typical troublemaker of the movie who doesn't really care, but in the end wants to help out if he can.

I honestly loved this film and it was surprising how witty and nostalgic it became. These writers & producers from the old days of the series, who returned for this movie, should be brought back again for the series as you could genuinely see the difference in the writing and production when you compare it to the show with the usual writers of the current series'.
