Movie Reviews of The Simpsons Movie (Widescreen Edition)Movie Review: Simpsons brilliance!!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I'm going to start off this review by stating something right away- it is NOT true that the Simpsons movie is nothing but one Homer painful gag after another (such as being electrocuted, stabbed, whatever). Sure, it happens, but it's not for the majority of time.
There's a well told story taking place with plenty of solid jokes. PLENTY of jokes for people who love the TV show. I'm really surprised at the quality of the story-telling and the careful creativity that was involved when making the jokes. Well done.
Sure, there's sometimes a certain amount of calmness to allow time to build up the storyline, but that's a good thing because a movie is supposed to have a detailed and exciting story in order to stand tall.
The animation is of course, absolutely brilliant. Very colorful, and beautifully well done animation. Just like the TV show.
The only bad parts are that not every single person from the town of Springfield that we've grown to love over the years made an appearance. Some of them didn't say anything at all. Here's the list of characters and how often they appeared in the movie-
Abe Simpson- appeared quite often, which is surprising considering lately on the TV show we haven't been seeing him as often compared to the older days when he'd frequently have his own episodes. He was pretty funny.
Agnes Skinner- didn't appear at all. Didn't see her anywhere.
Apu- disappointing he only said one or two lines and that was IT. He deserved more time in the movie than that.
Arnie Pie- didn't appear at all.
Artie Ziff- didn't appear at all.
Barney- appeared a few times, and was quite funny.
Bart Simpson- obviously, he took up a majority of the film. He was absolutely great too.
The Bumblebee Man- he actually appeared during a scene on TV.
Carl- appeared a couple times.
Chief Wiggum- appeared the appropriate amount of times, and had a couple funny lines.
Cletus- only appeared twice. When he appeared, I was laughing hard though.
The Comic Book Guy- appeared a few times and didn't deserve it, in my opinion. He's not that great of a character.
Cookie Kwan- thank God she didn't appear.
The Crazy Cat Lady- appeared a few times, and was great. I don't get all the hatred for her character from the TV show.
Disco Stu- you know, I don't remember seeing him anywhere.
Dolph- yeah, I think.
Drederick Tatum- yup, in one scene.
Dr. Hibbert- yup, in one or two scenes. Didn't speak much though, which is REALLY a shame.
Dr. Nick Riviera- yup, he appeared once in a funny scene.
Duffman- nowhere to be seen.
Edna Krabappel- VERY disappointed that she appeared once or twice, but didn't speak at all.
Fat Tony- appeared once, and had one funny line.
Gil- didn't appear at all. Surprised.
Groundskeeper Willie- I don't think he appeared at all either. REALLY surprised.
Hans Moleman- appeared briefly.
Helen Lovejoy- nope, not that I remember.
Homer Simpson- you better BELIEVE he appeared quite often! He appeared more than any other character which makes perfect sense, doesn't it?
Itchy- yup, in the beginning
Jasper- nope, nowhere
Jimbo- yup, for one or two scenes.
Judge Harm- nope, absolutely nowhere.
Judge Snyder- once again, not in the movie.
Kang- absent.
Kearney- yup, briefly.
Kent Brockman- yeah, pretty often. Pretty funny.
Kirk Van Houten- not anywhere.
Kodos- absent.
Krusty the Clown- appeared for one or two segments. He could have been funnier.
The Lawyer- nowhere.
Lenny- yeah, appeared a few times. Very funny when he appeared.
Lindsay Naegle- nowhere.
Lisa Simpson- oh yeah, but not as much as you'd probably expect.
Lou- yeah, appeared a couple times. Sort of funny.
Luann Van Houten- nope, nowhere.
Luigi Re Soto- appeared nowhere.
Maggie Simpson- you better believe it! Very adorable baby too.
Manjula- wasn't in the movie.
Marge Simpson- yup, quite regularly.
Martin- appeared a few times
Maude Flanders- ha! No.
Mayor Quimby- appeared once or twice.
Milhouse- appeared once or twice. Wasn't funny.
Miss Hoover- appeared, but didn't say anything.
Moe- appeared quite often. Very funny when he talked.
Mona J. Simpson- I thought *maybe* she'd appear, but no.
Mr. Burns- surprisingly, appeared only two or three times. Wasn't funny either.
Mr. Teeny- nope. Well unless you count that one scene where Homer was picturing a monkey that resembled Mr. Teeny. Otherwise, no.
Ned Flanders- appeared regularly. Very funny and very calm.
Nelson- appeared a few times. He was hysterical like always.
Otto- appeared once or twice with only one funny line.
Patty- I can't remember her being in the movie.
Principal Seymour Skinner- only appeared once but didn't say anything. Shocking indeed.
Professor Frink- had a few funny lines.
Rainier Wolfcastle- I think he was there.
Ralph Wiggum- appeared once or twice and was funny.
Reverend Lovejoy- appeared a couple times and was sort of funny. He's usually really funny, though.
The Rich Texan- wasn't in the film.
Rod and Todd Flanders- both appeared often.
Santa's Little Helper- appeared two or three times but didn't do anything really interesting.
Sarah Wiggum- didn't appear.
The Sarcastic Salesman- didn't appear in the movie.
Scratchy- appeared in the very beginning.
The Sea Captain- appeared, but didn't say anything.
Selma- I can't remember seeing her in the movie at all.
Sherri and Terri- nowhere at all.
Sideshow Bob- nope, unfortunately. Wasn't anywhere in the film.
Siedshow Mel- yeah, a few times.
Snake- nope, he wasn't around for some reason. Disappointing. He must have been off robbing someone.
Snowball- nowhere.
The Squeaky Voiced Teen- appeared at the end during the credits.
Superintendent Chalmers- nope, he was nowhere to be found.
Uter- not in the movie.
Waylon Smithers- appeared when Mr. Burns appeared, which is only a few times. Didn't say anything worthwhile.
The "Yes" Guy- thank goodness he wasn't around.
Also, they could have had more locations such as inside Bart and Lisa's school inside, the hospital, and inside Apu's store. Instead, it was mostly about Moe's bar, the town church and the Simpsons house/back yard. The majority of locations took place outside either in Springfield, the town lake, or Alaska (you'll find out why when you see the movie). Only one or two scenes involving Burns mansion as well.
Otherwise, the movie was really great. One thing that surprised me was hearing Marge and Ned Flanders talk in a mellow voice, that almost totally changed the sound of their voices. You'll hear these voices during a few segments. It looks like I'm disappointed but I'm actually surprised the quality of humor, the story-telling, and everything else was very good overall.
