Director Mark Rappaport takes us on a tour of the hidden and not so hidden gay undercurrents of the Golden Age of Hollywood. The narrator, Dan Butler, is our guide as he shows us how the powers that were tried to erase even the faintest tinges of homosexuality from Hollywood films. He does this by the use of film clips and combines them with director Rappaport's witty comments and insights. There is some really fascinating footage here as the film looks at ambiguous flirtations and behavior of some of those who were once Hollywood's leading men. The problem is that the film concentrates on only a few actors (Jerry Lewis, Danny Kaye, Cary Grant and a few others) and many times it is hard to understand what is being said. The clips are shown freeze style and are seen for very short intervals. Whether these is gayness or not in the clips that are shown is also questionable. Rappaport also stretches a point when he says in his script that the buddy movies of that period were reflections of repressed homosexuality and that heterosexual friendships between men do not really exist.
The film aims at sensationalism but falls very short of its goal. It is not sensational to name stars that have been out for years. Dan Butler talks so much that you feel like telling him just to shut up and many of the interesting film clips are lost because of his incessant banter. Furthermore, Rappaport sees homosexuality in the friendships between men when it is just not there.
