Movie Reviews of The Signal

Movie Review: Not as good as expected
Summary: 2 Stars

I was looking forward to this movie when I read about it, but after seeing it I was disappointed. It started out good but then slowly became boring and uninteresting. The beginning and end are really good but the middle just slows down too much and becomes convoluted. It could have been 20 minutes shorter and would have been better. You could tell each of the 3 portions was directed by a different person.

Movie Review: Good for a laugh not a scare
Summary: 4 Stars

I will not go into movie synopsis and all that as to draw this out longer than it needs to be. A friend of mine and I purchased this movie hoping to be scared out of our minds...that was not the case. However, this movie is still Grade A entertainment. I never thought I would become a fan of random acts of violence but some instances of this movie are just downright classic comedy. Some parts may cause you to place your hand over your mouth and shake your head side to side in shame and remorse for victims but that does not take away from the comedic aspects of the film. This film is comedy, mild horror, romance, and suspense all at the same time.

Movie Review: A New and Unusual Horror Film.....Well Worth the Price
Summary: 5 Stars

"The Signal" is a breath of fresh air for the horror fan. It seems like Hollywood is so intent on remaking almost any 1980's horror film, or Americanizing that latest Japenese Ghost story, originality has been pushed to the backburner. "The Signal" stands out not only with a pretty original story (I was expecting a rip-off of Stephen King's "Cell" novel, but any similarity is only a passing one), it's filmed in a unique way, and is presented in a fun format. Basically, take some of the elements of "28 Days Later", mix in some "Pulp Fiction", and add large doses of "Shaun of the Dead" type humor and you have "The Signal". The gore level and special effects will satisfy the gore hound, with beheadings, head smashes, and a great scene involving an arm getting screwed to the wall!! But don't let the gore be a turn-off for you if you are not into the red stuff. For all of the gory scenes there are quite a few that will have you laughing out loud. The film makers seem to have struck a perfect balance with "The Signal".

I strongly caution you to be wary of some of the reveiws posted here that provide spoilers. I had no idea what this film was about, just popped it and sat back for the ride. It's a truly "fun" horror film, that will have you chuckling one moment and cringing the next. Well worth the price to own.

Movie Review: Solid little independent horror film
Summary: 4 Stars

Going into The Signal, I wasn't sure what to think. Was it going to be a rip off of Stephen King's lame zombie book Cell, would it be a creative and original independent movie filmed in my home town?
The answer lies somewhere in the middle, but The Signal is without a doubt a triumph in the field of independent cinema and serves as a great example of what a few determined aspiring filmmakers can accomplish when they work hard enough.
A few things to note about this movie. One: It's broken into three segments each directed by a different person. Two: Don't expect a formulaic Hollywood type plot where you are spoonfed what's happening, that isn't the point of the movie. You should look at the Signal as one of those pleasant surprises that you find yourself watching late at night on IFC or Sundance.
That said, I must also stress that this movie is also not a typical "art flick" either.
The story breaksdown like this:
A woman is cheating on her husband when a mysterious signal begins broadcast over television and radio essentially turning everyone who watches it or hears it long enough into a raving lunatic.
Don't confuse the victims' lunacy with the rage virus from 28 Days Later, these people are still intelligent and can even be reasoned with to a degree in some instances, they're just stark raving mad, which makes for some funny moments during the second portion of the film.
Don't expect too much of an ending though and enjoy the film's unique premise and take on the idea of mass insanity and you will come out feeling as though watching was time well spent.
The soundtrack is also worth mentioning with a good cover of the Joy Division classic Atmosphere playing throughout.
Also of note, great work from all of the amatuer actors involved in the project, they serve as great examples of the fact that you don't need big names to make a good film and in fact the majority of the time fresh faces actually make a movie even better.

Movie Review: Weak Signal
Summary: 2 Stars

Well, just got thru watching the signal and now I understand why it never came out in theaters. The story goes like this: a strange signal from who knows where(we nver find out)begins emitting thru the T.V. and phones around the world(we assume)and starts making people go crazy and killing each other.Sounds like a good story and could have been alot better but here our the movies flaws. First, the movie starts off being a straight up suspense/horror movie then for some reason half way thru turns into a comedy/horror then goes to a straight horror. It was like the director(or in this case directors) did not know which direction they wanted to take the movie.I guess thats what happens when you have three different people directing one movie.Second, you never see whats going on in other cities or places. This movie could have been much better with a deeper plot. And third, the ending really sucked. I won't give it away but lets just say it leaves to much unansered and ends way to fast. So all in all, I cannot recommened this film.I would of gave it one star but I gave it two because I like the part where he puts the guys head in a vice grip .I thought that was funny as hell and the only part that was entertaining. I really don't understand why some people think this was such a great movie? I guess they have yet to see a really good horror movie.
