Movie Reviews of The Shootist

Movie Review: The Duke at his later best!
Summary: 5 Stars

John Wayne is an American icon. Of his latter movies, there is none more interesting to watch than The Shootist. In a way, it is the story of the death of the basic charactor Wayne played in his film carrer - and filmed in perfect timing to match Wayne's own age and health at the time.
The scenes with Jimmy Stewart, though short, are a timelss treasure of film history. And the story, while having some of the simple western stereotypes in it, goes beyond the classic plots of a "Western" and delivers a very memorable story.

This is a must see for any one John Wayne fans.

Movie Review: The Duke's Moving Valedictory
Summary: 5 Stars

Though not intended as John Wayne's final film, "The Shootist" (1976) emerged as a stirring epitaph to a screen legend. As gunfighter J.B. Books, Wayne delivered the performance of his career with a haunting resonance that cannot be found in his later films. A fine ensemble cast (with memorable portrayals by Lauren Bacall, Ron Howard and James Stewart) and Don Siegel's sensitive direction lend integrity to this poignant character study. Though a box-office disappointment when first released, "The Shootist" has grown in stature since the Duke's passing and remains an American classic.

Movie Review: Farewell, my friend, farewell !
Summary: 5 Stars

Call it as you want: Bitter valedictory, the swan's song, the final homage in life which works out as a well deserved and heartfelt homage to the western meaning but there is more beneath the script. If "On golden pond" was a true homage to Henry Fonda, and "Madadayo" was the personal Farewell of Akira Kurosawa, this movie filmed several years ago, possesses that sunset atmospherethat makes it unforgettable

Sad and poignant story concerning to a gunfighter who knows he will die of cancer. Sad valedictory in memory of John Wayne.

Movie Review: Super Western with a Super Cast
Summary: 5 Stars

This was John Wayne's last movie (1976). It is also the only one I can recall that he dies in. I wore out the VHS tape on this one so was forced to buy the DVD. This is by far his best western in my opinion. Lauren Bacall & Ron Howard compliment The Duke beautifully in this simple but very touching story of a famous gunman facing his last days with terminal cancer. This is also my favorite Lauren Bacall movie. Jimmy Stewart also adds a very nice touch with his limited screen time as the town doctor. A must see for western lovers!

The Shootist DVD

It's difficult to watch the Shootist, knowing that John Wayne was, in fact, dying of cancer, as was his character in the movie, and this was his last completed movie. John Wayne plays a dying cowboy/lawman that has come to town to die. It is, also somewhat symbolic of an Age dying, when you see the street cars down the middle of the main drag.

Highly recommended for fans of John Wayne, Western movies, and action films.
