Movie Reviews of The Shootist

Movie Review: John Wayne jumps on the revisionist bandwagon
Summary: 5 Stars

He ends his career with a film about the dying fantasy of the invincible western hero by dying. Don't let that spoiler fool you, it's not really a spoiler. It's revealed early in the film that he's going to die of cancer soon. What's interesting is the context in which he dies which everyone should see. This is a film that really challenges the romanticism of the western gunman and what that really does to his life. Obviously, it makes him a constant target and so he's in constant danger not because of dangerous characters around him, but because people want to kill him for the fame. Interesting performances by Lauren Bacall, Ron Howard, and Jimmy Stewart makes this an interesting dramatic piece. It works even if you don't know that Wayne was dying of cancer in real life at the time the movie was made.

Movie Review: The Duke Goes Out In Style...
Summary: 5 Stars

It's a real pleasure to write on John Wayne for this, his final movie. He gave a 1st Class performance as the aging Gunman, John Bernard Books - go figure, the man can act, and always could. Is it any wonder that Mr. Wayne is still listed at the top of favorite actors, 30 years after his last film?

Add other legends such as Jimmy Stewart, Richard Boone, and Miss Becall, as well as Ronny Howard and others. This classic just can't be beat, and today's Hollywood can't even hope to match this. Forget sick, so-called cowboy movies today like Brokeback Mountain - what a pathetic farce made by a phony, politically-correct Hollywood. NO ONE holds a candle to The Duke, a real man of his time, and for all times.

Movie Review: John Wayne going out fighting
Summary: 5 Stars

This has to be 5 stars. John Wayne was dying of cancer at the time the film was being made. He plays an aging gunfighter who is dying of cancer. In the wrong hands this could be a disaster, but it isn't and its a great film.

This has a fantastic cast: As well as John Wayne there is also Lauren Bacall, James Stewart a young Ron Howard (then famous for Happy Days) and a few other well known faces.

The director is Don Siegel, one of the very best from the 70's. Elegiac is a word that has been used a lot to sum up this film and I think this comes from Siegels direction and a marvellous script, both of which brilliantly portray the end of an era (the old west), and of course the last film from an iconic American film star.

Movie Review: A Legend Passes
Summary: 5 Stars

"I won't be wronged, I won't insulted, I won't be laid a hand on. I don't do these things to others and require the same of them." Books credo and a fitting finale to a long and legendary career. Once there were giants. Wayne, Cagney, Cooper, Hepburn, Grant, Gable, Flynn, Bogart, all gone. We shall not see their like again. Wayne, undoubtably the most popular movie star of all time ( He was number one at the box office 21 times -- Gary Cooper did it 18 and Clint Eastwood 17), after a career of classic films in the 1940's and 50's, some routine oaters in the 1960's and early 1970's -- broken up by TRUE GRIT -- the Duke ends his career (though he didn't know at the time) with a movie that eerie reflect of the man and his life.

Movie Review: Classis Johnny Wayne
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a really good Johnny Wayne Movie. I hadn't seen this for long time, so it was nice to be able to pick it up. I'm also glad I bought it when I did, because I got it here on amazon for $6.88 just a couple of weeks ago. Wow, I can't believe what they are charging for it now ($34.98). It was a good movie, but no need to price it like a brand new blu-ray. Anyway, if your true John Wayne fan, you'll like this movie as it has action, drama, and some nice tender moments. As always, John Wayne's character becomes the mentor for the kid in the movie. I only wish I could have met the Duke before he went on his final ride.
