Movie Reviews of The Shape of ThingsMovie Review: on moralism and art... Summary: 5 Stars
This film has been marketed as a film about seduction, and most reviewers have either swallowed that whole or taken the equally prosaic view that it's yet another display of Labute's purported obsession with people dehumanizing people (facile and totally inaccurate take, especially with regard to "In the Company of Men"). Both are abysmally wrong. In fact, "The Shape of Things" is really about art and morality, and questions whether those two words should ever be used in the same sentence. Without giving away the ending, let's just say that LaBute leans heavily towards a negative answer. The film is a disturbing celebration of the gloriously amoral nature of art at its best---that the best art is subversive, and even though truly subversive art might challenge or demolish some of our comfy assumptions, in the end those who feel most threatened by it actually post a net gain, however painful or uncomfortable the cost. The implication is that all change, regardless of the means applied, is ultimately a good thing. (NOTE: this is NOT to say that one of the characters is really all that great as an artist.) Labute's dialogue is top-notch as usual, Gretchen Mol and Rachel Weiscz are both excellent, and this film is definitely worth repeated viewings.
Movie Review: A must for all people who like good cinema Summary: 5 Stars
One of the most witty films to come out this year , the shape of things describes the romance taking place between art student Evelyn ( Weisz ) and shy , museum security guard Adam ( Rudd ) . From the very beginning of their relationship Adam seems to lack the trust needed in himself . " Why do you like me ? ..." he asks Evelyn out of the blue ..."i'm nothing " . She doesn't seem to share his point of view though . The movie displays it's message loud and clear throughout it's length : it's all about the retreats we often make so that we can fit in or please the people we're with . What makes it stand out though is the fact that , for a dialogue-heavy film , it has such a striking and undeniably memorable ending in which all those initial comments about human relationships take a far more powerfull form . Furthemore , the acting is truly exceptional . Rudd with his interpid sweetness and Weisz with her fierce , underground sex-appeal create two characters equally interesting and , in their own way lovable . Overall "The Shape Of Things " is probably Labute's finest work yet . It's smart , well-perfomed and definitely entertaining - a rare piece of moviemaking without doubt .
Movie Review: Great Film powered by a powerful performance by Rachel Weisz Summary: 5 Stars
A top-notch movie that not only puts the fear in you about the relationship you are in but makes you question your motives in the process. Every thing in this film puts in question the power struggles we face in the relationships we are in and makes us face ourselves as human beings. Neil LaBute not only creates a movie that so exposes the nerves and muscles of relationships, but exposes the hypocrisy of the society they dwell in as well. Rachel Weisz not only floors you with her powerful performance as Evelyn but also makes you question your own morality in the process by her character view of the world. No one is innocent in this movie, and even though Evelyn may seem immoral, she might also be the most moral character of the entire film because she at least does not hide her views of the world. Which makes her sort of a beacon of truth, even though her views are as disturbing as they are immoral. I dare anyone to not come out of this film a different person that the one who started to watch it. It will not only blow you away but floor you as well with it's ending. Thank you Neil Labute and Rachel Weisz for such breathtaking and powerful movie.
Movie Review: Very profound Summary: 5 Stars
I really enjoyed the movie THE SHAPE OF THINGS. It's an incredibly smart movie in terms of it's simple message painted throughout the plot. The movie is a dark comedy. We follow Evelyn, an art student, and Adam, who works in a museum. He asks her out, but feels self conscious about who he is and why she is interested in him. Basically she manipulates him, and he is more than willing since he doesn't believe that he is good enough for her. The movie basically paints the realistic picture that we as people take on when we are with someone, we change for them so they will like us. That's what happens here. She tears through his life, changing everything about him to the point where his friends barely recognize him. The ending brings it all together, and is ultimately a very memorable ending, bringing all these elements together in a nice twist. Overall, the acting was superb, and the movie was interesting. Highly reccomended.
Movie Review: NEIL LaBute's WORK OF ART Summary: 5 Stars
I saw "The Shape of Things" when it was running on Broadway and was amazed-- then I saw it as a film when the movie came out with the same 4 original stars, directed by the same director, Neil LaBute.. both ARE AMAZING (I also read the play.) "The shape of Things is a compelling story.. deep, yet comical -- it will definitely make you think and start conversation immediately afterward (some people get into heated arguments about the morality of the main character (beautifully played by Rachel Weiss.) A DEFINITE must own !!! (The cost of a ticket was about $80. and the DVD is only about $20 - $25...) ENJOY!!
