Movie Reviews of The Shadow

Movie Review: Good triumphs evil in an ultimate representation.
Summary: 5 Stars

You see Baldwin getting lessons from Tibet master that the good and evil comes down from the heart in battling the evil. And the good always wins out, and triumphs the darkness. Such great skill so attained by Baldwin later comes to use, and it continues the good deeds of mankind. Perfect acting skills by professional John Lone in creating a character that is "vividly evil", "larger than life", acurrately depicting what a great villain can be; and that, the villain has met his final challenge. Lone displays a modern version of Iago that he "must seduce the hero in joining him" -- the conquest of a new empire controlling the whole world. Great lessons come to display by Baldwin, and you see Baldwin refusing the temptation and returns mankind the righteousness. Quickly, you see Baldwin in mind controlling a piece of broken mirror in the final scene that ends the dream of a tyrant. Brilliant Special Effects, great direction, great music, exciting, hilarious, heroic, great acting skills by Lone, and clever script. Extremely entertaining. Buy the video.

Movie Review: He did cloud a lot of 90's minds!
Summary: 5 Stars

I never rehash the plots. This movie missed a lot of people when it was released, I would say that 85-90% of the movie crowd at that time missed it, completely over their heads, or clouded, pick your poison. I am old enough to faintly remember old time radio in it's final faze, a lot of them were gone when I was starting to listen, "The Shadow" was still on, I do remember it, over the years I have collected old time radio shows on tape and cds, there are a lot of Shadow shows out there, to me, the movie was almost dead on catching the feel of the old shows, great cast, Baldwin, McKellen, Curry, Winters and Boyle were very good, but the real star of the movie was John Lone, he was fantastic as Kahn!, he is one of the most brilliant actors in the world, as good as he was in this movie, he is even better in "The Iceman", absolutely brilliant!!!! Its a shame this film didn't make a bigger splash then it did, because as good as it was, I think better "Shadow" movies could have been made, oh well, I'm glad this fine movie was made, it is one of my very favorites as well as "Iceman".

Movie Review: The best!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is by far the best adaptation of a comic book / radio show out there. Forget Spiderman, X-men, and Batman. The Shadow is a stylized, classy, fun movie all around with witty dialog, wonderful effects, and an amazing look to it. Russell Mulcahy has outdone himself with this one. I loved the look of the music videos he directed in the 80's for Duran Duran. (look at his profile on Wikipedia - he did more music videos than I ever realized) This movie is a wonderful addition to his resume.
The Shadow has great visuals, a fantastic score by Jerry Goldsmith, fabulous costumes, and the city has a perfect "Gotham" feel to it. The dialog has many wonderful humorous points to it, and it's one of the few movies where the hero and villian will sit down together to have a polite conversation about exactly how they're going to kill one another, and they do it with the utmost of class.
It's a big budget movie that somehow flopped at the box office, but is nevertheless worth a look!

Movie Review: TRUE TO THE TIME PERIOD -- ONLY THE SHADOW KNOWS
Summary: 5 Stars

I can't remember if the laugh used on the DVD is anywhere close to the radio personation but it still intrigues me.

Lamont Cranston as THE SHADOW was a radio program that was barely allowed to be heard by the young group.
The comic book was an upgrade in visual action.
The movie was a coming together of memories from across the years.

Alec Baldwin gave an intrigueing and convincing man about town as the SHADOW [which is hard to do with so many preconcreived ideas of the character]

The tone was set in the right era which denies all of this modern fancy work. The characters were well matched to the actors portraying them [or visa versa]. It is a movie I will enjoy watching again.

Penelope Ann Miller was excellent but not as I imagined Margo Lane. The villians were excellent - the photography great and the illusion of the Hotel tickled me.

Yup! Definitely added to my collection as a Classic.

Movie Review: Superb recreation of a superhero
Summary: 5 Stars

Along with "The Phantom", "The Shadow" is a lavish showcase of Art Deco settings and opulent epoch recreation. Penelope Ann Miller's wardrobe is spiffy, Jerry Goldsmith's music is fantastic and the settings are plush in that quirky thirties fashion. John Lone excels in his feature of the evil Gengis Khan descendant and Alec Baldwin fleshes out a feisty and craggy Shadow. The plot is simple but provides the perfect backdrop for a film where special effects and a soigné production come uppermost. At the end of the World WarI, Lamont Cranston spends several years as an opium dealer and mobster of sorts in the Tibet. A decadent character, his life takes on a new course when a tulku teaches him how to control the evil that lurks in his heart and Cranston goes back to New York as the Shadow, a do-gooding superhero that strives to weed out evil. As said, the plot is effective but the general esthetic of the film is simply a feast for the senses.
