Movie Reviews of The Secret Garden

Movie Review: Movie
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a wonderful movie! We have read the book and the girls got to see the movie and really enjoyed it. It's a story with a lot of lessons and life experiences that children can learn from.

Movie Review: How Do I Love This Movie? Oh, Let Me Count The Ways!
Summary: 5 Stars

Classic story, unreal cinematography, all in all fantastic film.

The DVD itself doesn't really have any extras or interesting things because it's a film from '93. If I remember correctly, there are some theatrical trailers.

I bought this DVD because I wanted this movie in DVD quality. Let me tell you, there's a difference. My VHS was pretty dull and the quality was not great (probably from being played so many times!). The DVD is much more vivid and smooth, and for this fantastic film, that is a bonus.

The directing and cinematography in this movie are beyond fantastic. This movie is purely a work of art. The locations that they shot this movie in are stunning. They leave you breathless and asking yourself where these places are so that you can visit them! I really feel like the locations(as well as the music) are what make this movie great. The great big house, the beautiful gardens, the isolated moor, they all really take you there. It makes it feel real and authentic.

Acting is fantastic too. Young Kate Maberly carries this movie from beginning to end with the help of her younger counterparts and veteran adult actors.

The music is incredible as well. I would recommend the soundtrack. This movie wouldn't be half of what it is without the haunting music that was created as a background for it. Beautiful.

Gorgeous film, one of my childhood favorites. See it on DVD, it's worth it!

Movie Review: A little disappointed
Summary: 4 Stars

I was disappointed that the version I received was edited, though probably only for length. There was one single feature that I have always recalled with fondness in this movie. When the young young scottish maid was surprised at a book the cousins were reading she pronounced it as "boo -k" like "root". Then I noticed her repeatedlly using that pronounciation. In this release, that entire sequence was missing? Having lived in different European countries as a child, I find the unique pronounciation of words by people living in the same place fascinating. As in the way some Irish-Americans pronounce "oi" as "er" and "er" as "oi". Remember Archie Bunker from the "All in the Family" TV series? He's a stereotyped example, but a good one. "Just rub some erl on it!" Yet the name Earl is inevitably pronounced, "Oil". I once worked with a fellow who did the same. And yet, after years of associating with people who pronounce it in the local accent, he never changed.
But, getting to the point, wonder why they left her dialogue out of the DVD?

Movie Review: great version
Summary: 5 Stars

Our family has loved this version of Francis Hodgson Burnett's classic about an ugly duckling and unwanted orphan. Even as my girls reached adulthood, we would still enjoy this. We also found the addition of a grown-up Colin and Mary to be charming, and in no way detracts from the original story in the book.

Movie Review: The Secret Garden
Summary: 4 Stars

My "grand" niece read this book and received points at school for completing it. I wanted her to compare what she read with the movie and she said that they were very close in comparison. She loved the movie as much as the book!
