Movie Reviews of The SearchersMovie Review: Searchers!! Summary: 5 Stars
Ethan Edwards, (John Wayne), finds his way home after the civil war to his brothers homestead. Some cattle are rustled and he and a few men track them only to discover it's a Comanche trick to lure them away while they kill out the folks left behind which is Ethan's brother, wife, and kids. They arrive back too late, all are dead except Ethan's niece who was taken captive. Ethan sets out to find his niece accompanied by Martin Pauley, (Jeffrey Hunter), who Ethan found as a baby years earlier after another Indian raid. Ethan loved his brother's wife which is clear in the book by Lemay but very lightly alluded to in the film. This helps to explain his rage because everything he cared for in the world is gone. He will pursue the Comanche that have his niece until hell freezes over. Along the way he finds that he is still a human being. This film is considered by some as the greatest western of all time and a favorite film of Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg if that means anything to you, I thought I would toss it in anyway.
Movie Review: Strong performance by Wayne, great storytelling! Summary: 5 Stars
John Wayne gives us one of his finest performances as a bitter, non-repentant ex-Confederate soldier, whose hate for Indians is boundless. Yet his character is able to show good humor as well.
The only weak performance is that of Jeffrey Hunter, the other major character in the movie. The acting seems made for the stage, a bit over the top for the screen. However, his character's relationship with a girl provides a good balance to the story. But his character could have matured a bit more, or perhaps even become a bit more like Ethan (Wayne).
There are a couple of stellar secondary character, most notably the preacher, ex-Captain, who also heads the rangers. It's good to have someone with as strong a will and leadership to compare and compete with Wayne's.
This DVD also has a few nice "making of" shorts, which is very unusual for a film this old. One includes an interview with a young Natalie Wood.
Movie Review: Greatness may be disturbing. Summary: 5 Stars
The Searchers is among the finest Westerns ever made. It is so good it's few small flaws tend to stand out. As far as the critisism that it is a racist film: the answer is that yes it is. In fact, that's the whole point. It seeks to hold up a mirror for white Americans. It is not "like" Birth of a Nation, it is, rather, John Ford's version of Birth of a Nation. (There would be some value in watching the two films back-to-back.) But it is a realistic version because Good and Evil, and the admirable and the disgusting, can exist in the same person at the same time. Just like in real life. Neither the good nor the bad in America cancel each other out. Notice how Ford starts his story: it appears that Ethan Edwards (Wayne) and his sister-in-law are in love with each other, but she chose to marry the brother. Think about that. This film is filled with such contradictions.
Movie Review: The Searchers.....John Wayne's best performance. Summary: 5 Stars
John Wayne is my favorite actor ever and one of my favorite westerns he made is The Searchers.
Wayne plays Ethan Edwards, an ex-Conderate soldier who seeks revenge on the Comanches who murdered his family and kidnapped his niece, played by a young Natalie Wood. Edwards sets out on a five-year quest to find his niece at any cost, and he'll stop at nothing to find her, he won't surrender to the harsh cold winter, hunger, thrist, the elements of nature, or the elements of loneliness. And while on his search, Edwards encounters something that he didn't expect to find: his own humanity.
John Wayne should have been nominated for a Best Actor Oscar. I believe that his performance in The Searchers was the best performance in his entire career.
If you want a good western to watch on a rainy summer day, give The Searchers a try. I liked it.
Movie Review: Greatest movie ever made! Summary: 5 Stars
Often hailed as one of the greatest westerns ever made, but to me it's more than that. In my opinion it must rank as one of the finest films ever, regardless of genre. Such superb directors as Spielberg, Scorosese and Lukas has openly admitted to being deeply influenced by "The Searchers". As a matter of fact, the original "Star Wars" bears some uncanny resemblance to "The Searchers". This is director Ford's ultimate achievement and actor John Wayne gives the performance of his life as the racist Ethan Edwards. The camera work is also breathtaking with it's panoramic views of Monument Valley, so often an uncredited "star" in Ford's epics such as "Stagecoach", "She Wore A Yellow Ribbon" and, yes, "The Searchers".
