Movie Reviews of The Science of SleepMovie Review: Life is like a dream. Literally. Summary: 4 Stars
The Science of Sleep isn't an easy movie. Not at first, at least. I begins a bit self-consciously and then creeps up on you, drawing you into the strange, unsettling worlds of the subconscious and then playing tricks with the viewer about the sometimes subtle differences between dreams and reality. I found myself in strangely familiar terrain, thinking back to my first love and the sadness, joy, wonder, insecurity, and, finally, pain over what was never meant to be. The moments of private craziness and creativity. The magic of that emotional bond on young hearts. Flipping back and forth between the mainly realistic and the sensationalistically bizarre, The Science of Sleep is a meditation on the human mind and heart.
I loved Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. It's probably my favorite movie. The Science of Sleep causes the same emotions to well up inside me; it's a similar, but unique meditation on the familiar theme of who we are, why we love, and the strange magic of human relationships.
Movie Review: A fun but serious movie Summary: 4 Stars
I thoroughly enjoy The Science of Sleep. It is fun and funny for the most part, but there are serious elements that require more attention. The love story between Stephane and Stephanie is cute at times, heart-breaking at other times. I wouldn't idly watch this movie, you would miss a lot. Also, it is half in French, half in English so unless you understand French you would have to be reading the subtitles.
It gets better each time you watch it, and I think you do need to watch it more than once to get the most out of it.
It is from the same director as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and the two films are similar in that they require attention and multiple viewings. However, it is worth it in the end, because it is a beautiful film and story.
Movie Review: What's wrong with the French? Summary: 4 Stars
Don't get me wrong, I loved this movie. I loved the artistry and the shifting from dream to reality and back. But the crude sophomoric behavior of the French subtracted from what would have been a nearly perfect movie. I didn't want to be subjected to farting and indiscriminate sexual innuendo in a movie that so uniquely and effectively covered the best part of my own life: sleeping and dreaming. If this is what passes for normal or acceptable behavior in France today, I'm a little upset. (I don't like what passes for normal or acceptable in America either, just so you understand me). I must be too sensitive or something, but the potty jokes and raunchiness erased what could have been a blissful movie experience.
Movie Review: Very different Summary: 4 Stars
Stephane is a creative, gentle soul who can't seem to disconnect from his sleep world while he's awake. When a girl named Stephanie moves in next door he seems to have met his soul-mate. Alas, Stephane's mental rambling sabotages the relationship before it can get started. He writes a strange note while half-asleep and sleep walks it across the hall to shove it under Stephanie's door. He only keeps his job because a co-worker covers for him, and that's only because the co-worker is desperately bored and Stephane's bizarre behavior is an amusing change. We get a glimpse into the world of a man with one foot in dreamland and one slipping out of reality.

Movie Review: If you rescue me... Summary: 4 Stars
I'm not entirely sure whether i like this movie or not, but i often re-watch it for the feeling it gives me.
I really like Michel Gondry and Gael García Bernal, but i'm still unsure about this movie.
It's easy for me to pin-point specific scenes that I love, however; it's hard for me to comment on the movie as a whole.
I give this movie 4 stars, though. Maybe because i'm just a sucker for independent films.. or maybe I truthfully liked this movie. I'm not entirely sure.
