Movie Reviews of The Science of SleepMovie Review: A dream on the screen... Summary: 5 Stars
Have you ever watched a film that was so in tune with humanity that you felt the film was made just for you? That happened with me here... I felt like the filmmakers leaped into my mind and baked up a concoction of everything I love about movies. The plot maybe confusing for some, but reveals itself gently as the movie progresses. The idea of someone confusing thier dreamworld with reality is a great base for a film, and makes for deeply philosophical and intelligent stuff. Being someone who studies lucid dreaming myself I found the entire premise utterly fascinating.
I can't imagine any red blooded film fan not loving this. Great plot, great acting by Gael Garcia Bernal, creative cinematography...all around just wonderful in every way I judge a movie. It's one of those movies that is so good, you find yourself thinking; "This film is so good that it's probably going to make the other movies I watch in the upcoming months seem like rubbish".
Highly recommended; especially for the thinkers out there.
Movie Review: Whimsical? Yes. Trite? Maybe. Summary: 5 Stars
It is difficult to describe the cumulative effect this film produces. In line with postmodern film, it takes non-linearity to the next level. It is melancholy, but not depressed. There's lots of humor, and heart but I left asking myself "what was the point?"
In all of the whimsical sequences, I started to wonder what the overal point of view Michel Gondry had. It wasn't until days later that I realized that my confusion echoed the characters' confusion. Or maybe they echoed my confusion. Or maybe I echoed Gondry's confusion. Or maybe I'm just a fundamentally confused guy. Oh wait, that was Gael Garcia Bernal's character.
It's disarmingly heady for something so surreal and fantastic. It deserves repeated viewing.
Movie Review: Another great film from Gondry Summary: 5 Stars
This film is one of the sweetest and most unique. Michel Gondry is a great director and is always interesting, most notably in Eternal Sunshine... and on his own Director's Work volume.
If you do not like foreign films, you may want to avoid this one. The majority of it is in English, but it is set in France and therefore there are many moments of French speaking. However, I love French movies, my favorite being Amelie, and, in fact, Gael Garcia Bernal's character reminded me very much of Amelie.
Both are sweet, sensitive, and shy, and have this sort of endearing quality that makes you love them. This movie has a great sense of humor and the dream sequences are wonderful.
Movie Review: LEAVE tiny minds AT THE DOOR Summary: 5 Stars
It's interesting how it's the French who seem to create the most personal works. Truffaut, Louis Malle and on the Italian side certainly Fellini have created brilliant personal films with heart, but having met Gondry, I was almost uncomfortable just how personal this film was. Not in a depressing martyr "look at all the tragedies that happened to me" sort of way, but in a "look how pathetically useless and immature I am in relationships" and wrap it up in such a wonderfully subtle, sweet, funny, poignant and ultimately sad film with the amazing Charlotte Gainsbourg. I don't think I could personally present myself so nakedly in a mass media, though I applaud Michel for doing it so eloquently.
Movie Review: Lost In Dreams Summary: 5 Stars
This film is about a young man who has some disorder where he can't tell his dreams and life apart all the time. He's a creative type, drifting through life and looking for his break... also looking for a girlfriend.
The interesting part in my opinion is that in the midst of this there's no traditional love story. The man is a bit of a maniac, the girl he loves doesn't love anyone. Yet somehow, we see them as the vulnerable people they really are, and their distance is much better than so many phony love story films about air-headed narcissists getting together. Of course, it may take a certain acceptance of the bitter-sweetness of life to want to watch a film like this.
