Movie Reviews of The Scarlet Pimpernel

Movie Review: This beats all!
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been in love with this movie ever since I borrowed it from the local library. Thus far I have been disappointed to find that it's out of print and now It's on DVD!!! Jane Seymour epitomises that role of Marguerite St Just. Ahh It's just totally fabulous. Anthony Andrews plays the most brilliant Percy Blakney that I have ever seen (and I've seen most versions of the Pimpernel). It's very weird to see Ian McKellen as Chauvlin when we've all become to him being Gandalf, but it's worth it. If you love or even just like The Scarlet Pimpernel, then this movie is a must have. It has action, drama, suspense, romance and gorgeous costumes!

Movie Review: Great production values, good story
Summary: 5 Stars

By far the best of the Scarlet Pimpernel films. Wonderful costumes and sets, but what really sets it apart is the way that Anthony Andrews captures Sir Percy, both as the fashionable fop and in his action-hero persona. Fans of the book should be warned that the second half of the film comes from a different novel altogether, Eldorado, and follows that story only in general outlines. Chauvelin's romantic interest in Marguerite is also an invention of this film, although it works. But the whole thing so beautifully replicates the spirit of Orczy's novel (is better than the original, in fact) that I highly recommend it for all Pimpernel fans.

Movie Review: A Wonderful Adaptation
Summary: 5 Stars

I watched this film shortly after reading the book and I fell in love. Anthony Andrews was PERFECT as the Scarlet Pimpernel, playing both the fop and the hero with ease. I would have preferred if Marguerite had been written as she was in the novel, but Jane Seymour was both lovely and extremely talented in the role as it was written for the movie.

The end of the movie was changed from the book, but the way they chose to do so was wonderful and I was not disappointed.

I HIGHLY recommend this movie for both those who have and have not read the book. It is an amazing story of heroism, true love and adventure.

Movie Review: The 2nd modern superhero
Summary: 5 Stars

My dad turned me on to this story. He prefers the original with Leslie Howard but I have all of the versions and I like them all.

This is the charactor that Zorro and later Batman & Superman were created from. Now arguably the first superhero that I know of is Gilgamesh but almost no one has heard of him outside of school these days.

I call him the second modern superhero because Sherlock Holmes was published before Baroness Orczy wrote her story.

WEll enough pontificating. Watch it for yourselves and decide if you like it or not. As always Jane Seymour is the very definition of Classic Beauty.

Movie Review: They seek him...
Summary: 5 Stars

Ever since I was 6 or 7 this has been my favorite movie. At 7 my parents gave me a kitten for xmas, first thing I did was name him after the Scarlet Pimpernel...Sir Percy Blakeney. Now 20 years later both he and the movie continue to delight and entertain my freinds, family and most importantly, myself. At 27 I am just as in love with the characters today as I was when I was 7.

One of the most fantastic period pieces in my opinion. It's wonderful to see all those amazing actors so young and still amazingly talented. Wonderfully directed and acted! The costumes and the sets are also incredible. Such a classic.
