Movie Reviews of The Scarlet PimpernelMovie Review: Finally on dvd! Summary: 5 Stars
I searched for a copy of this movie a few years ago and ended up paying way too much for a used vhs copy. But it was worth it. This is about the best costumed romantic adventure you could hope for. The story line is exciting and believable. It forces you to imagine the horror of the French Revolution. The characters are a little one dimensional, except for Percy of course. Anthony Andrews plays him to the hilt. He's a perfect fop, a perfect hero, and a complete slave to his many emotions. Jane Seymour is marvelously suited as the woman he adores and mistrusts. And she is beautiful. This one of a handful of movies that I watch yearly and never seem to tire of. And now its available on dvd. Perfection.
Movie Review: Don't miss this "lost classic"! Summary: 5 Stars
Taped this on the old VCR when it first aired on CBS in 1982 and wore that tape down to nothing. Purchased the commercial VHS when it came out, and recently upgraded to the DVD. Can you tell I love this movie?
Hard to believe a broadcast television network produced such an engaging take on this classic tale. The story has everything--romance, political intrigue, swashbuckling action. Anthony Andrews is absolutely magnificent in the title role. I don't want to reveal too much of the story since that is a large part of the fun for first-time viewers. I've recommended this to dozens of people over the years, and so far no one has been disappointed. Give it a try!
Movie Review: DVD review Summary: 5 Stars
Absolutely wonderful DVD -- great acting by all main characters and also some wonderful bit characters, such as the hapless guard at the Paris gate who keeps letting the Scarlett Pimpernel and the escaping French nobles through. No violence at all to speak of, the guillotining is imagined rather than shown in gory detail. The technical quality of the DVD was also fine.
My only comment is that there is a small amount of skin in the bedroom scenes between Armand and his girl friend, which unfortunately may make it unsuitable for some younger viewers. This is really too bad, because kids also would get a great kick out of this wonderful movie.
Movie Review: The Elusive Pimpernel Summary: 5 Stars
Ahhh, this movie is to die for! Although not completely "by the book", the dashing Anthony Andrews manages to capture the essence of Percy. From his fop-headed Sir Percy to his debonaire Pimpernel, the portrayal of his character is expertly matched. Not to be undone, Jane Seymour's impression of the most beautiful woman in French revolution-era England and France is wonderful. The passion/chemistry between the two is perfect. And the trickery of the Pimpernel's escape plans to save some French aristocracy from the citizens of France adds just the right amount of mystery and intrigue to interest even the male gender. Exquisite for a made-for-tv movie.
Movie Review: The Scarlet Pimpernel Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this DVD because I only want to own classic movies in my library. I searched everywhere for it, prior to going to Amazon.com, but could not find it anywhere. I knew that it was an excellent movie, and wanted it for my collection. It takes place during the French Revolution, and is filled with intrigue, mystery and romance. If any of those subjects are interesting to you, I'm sure you'll enjoy this movie. Amazon.com also listed several other versions of the same movie, which are all probably excellent as well, but since I was familiar with this version, and knew that I liked Jane Seymour and Anthony Andrews, it was a win-win for me.
