Movie Reviews of The Scarlet Pimpernel

Movie Review: A Favourite Movie
Summary: 5 Stars

I highly recommend this movie version of The Scarlet Pimpernel, which takes the viewer back to the tumultuous times of the French Revolution and documents the heroic activities of an English aristocrat and his small group of friends who risk their own lives to save those of their French counterparts from Madame Guillotine.
This is an elaborate production with wonderful actors who play their parts to perfection.
The costuming and locations are a real feature of the film, giving the viewer an amazing look at the dress, customs and society of the time.
If you are also a fan of the book written by Baroness Orczy, you will not disappointed with the way the story unfolds and with the character portrayals. Well worth watching!!!

Movie Review: Flamboyant Fop Fights French Foes Fabulously!
Summary: 5 Stars

Wonderful British made-for-television production of 'The Scarlet Pimpernel,' the 18th century version of Clark Kent/Superman. A glorious production with a great cast: Jane Seymour (who has never looked more ravishingly beautiful and buxom), Anthony Andrews and Ian McKellen (Lord of the Rings).

Sir Percy Blakeney (Anthony Andrews), stars as the Scarlet Pimpernal, a British nobleman masquerading in revolutionary France as a harmless British fop as he secretly works at rescuing unjustly imprisoned French aristocracy from beheading.

Production values are second to none and as most British production go, the acting is superb. If you love period pieces, or hobnobing with the rich and famous you'll love it!

Movie Review: Been waiting for years
Summary: 5 Stars

I saw this movie on TV back when it came out in the early 80s and loved it. It has been available only on tape up recently. I am so happy to be able to purchase this on DVD.

This is a terrific adapation, perfectly casted, with great performances. To me, this is the definitive Scarlet Pimpernel.

This version of the Scarlet Pimpernel is very well acted with Anthony Andrews brilliant portrayal of the foppish Sir Percival Blakeney. Jane Seymore is of course very very beautiful as Marguerite, and Ian McKellan is a perfectly dastardly Chauvelin. When I first saw this, I had no idea who Ian McKellan was, but his acting really caught my attention. Of course everyone knows who he is now.

Movie Review: Long live the Scarlet Pimpernel!
Summary: 5 Stars

If you love seeing a movie with a hero/the good guys combined with plenty of action and adventure, love, some lighthearted moments and even a few surprises, up against a backdrop of an actual historic period in history...you'll LOVE this movie! It's excellently cast, from Anthony Andrews as Sir Percy Blakeney and Jane Seymour as the beautiful Marguerite St. Just, on down the list...the performances are stunning and lend credibility to the period. Andrews plays both his identities (by day--a typical fop, also secretly the "Scarlet Pimpernel") splendidly and as a master of disguises. I can't think of anyone being better in the role. It's entertaining from beginning to end...and one of my all-time favorite movies!

Movie Review: THE best version of The Scarlet Pimpernel!
Summary: 5 Stars

I first watched this entertaining classic in my high school French class and I couldn't help but love it. You've got Anthony Andrews, playing a cool-headed hero as well as a hilarious idiot, and you've got the amazingly BEAUTIFUL Jane Seymour, playing her role as the most beautiful woman in France to perfection! This is one of those movies that people of all ages would enjoy. It has enough romance, humor, suspense, & action to keep just about anyone hooked from beginning to end! Plus, the sets and costumes are historically accurate and along with the fabulous cast & script create a rich atmosphere for the viewer. This is the ULTIMATE movie version of Baroness Orczy's classic novel & is highly recommended.
