Movie Reviews of The Scarlet Pimpernel

Movie Review: Love, Love, Love...The Scarlet Pimpernel!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have so often thought of this movie over the years and was so delighted when I found it sitting very prettily in my recommendations list! When I first saw the title I thought surely this can't be the actual tv movie I saw so long ago. With breath held I clicked on the link and when it opened I would have jumped up and down for joy had it not been for my broke knee. I did, however, do I happy dance in my chair!! I added it very quickly to my cart and checked out. With my Amazon Prime subscription it was here in two days! As soon as UPS delivered it I opened it up and popped that baby in the blu-ray player. As soon as Anthony Andrews talked I laughed out loud. The movie tells a great story, but Andrews character just makes me smile and laugh. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing this movie again and will watch it again and again. Thank you Amazon!!!

Movie Review: A Time for Heroes
Summary: 5 Stars

"They seek him here, they seek him there, those Frenchie's, they seek him everywhere". This line entertains a fraction of the thrilling story of heroism and valor of a late 18th century English nobleman who risks his life in a variety of disguises to save the lives of French aristocracy condemned to death by revolutionaries.

What surprised me was the humor...it was very funny! Everyone knows Jayne Seymour and most know Ian McKellan, but Anthony Andrews gives one of the best acting performances I've ever seen. Where has he gone? He's terrific! That is REAL talent!
Clearly this film belongs to him. This is a wonderful story and very well done. I thought it ended rather abruptly, but other than that this is now one of my favorite movies. Give it a try. You'll be glad you did!

Movie Review: my favorite movie
Summary: 5 Stars

...since I was about seven years old, when it premiered on TV.

For years, the VHS copy retailed at about eighty bucks. Then it was mass-produced, I guess, so I do have a video tape. Now I'm going to buy it on DVD.

I never thought we'd be so lucky.

Anthony Andrews is a fantastic actor. Most people accessing these reviews probably know who Ian McKellan and Jane Seymour are, but Anthony Andrews is by far the most underappreciated actor in the world. He's never been discovered by American audiences, sadly.

Also, the score to this movie is fantastic. If only new Hollywood releases could adhere to instrumentation and style of the times of their storylines (i.e. The Girl with the Pearl Earring--I almost walked out because the music was so bad!).

Movie Review: Classic, in every sense of the word!
Summary: 5 Stars

From the time I saw this movie at age 14, it has been one of my (and my entire family's & many friends) favorites--finally on DVD! Thank you to the brilliant person who thought of a DVD version. This is, by far, the best version of Baroness Orczy's classic novel (there are many, beginning with Leslie Howard's, David Nivens', etc.)

It makes for a satisfying dose of historical drama, romance, adventure, sacrifice, suspense, swordplay and humor.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for your home video/DVD collection!

P.S. The Scarlet Pimpernel is actually the first in a long series of novels by Baroness Orczy! If you want to add worthwhile titles to your reading list, take a look at blakeneymanor.com--you'll be in for a wonderful surprise!

Movie Review: It's finally out on DVD!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have waited forever for this film to come to DVD. My VHS copy was getting worn out from so many repeated viewings! I saw this when it was first broadcast many years ago (I was just a youngster then) and fell in love with Anthony Andrews! He is absolutely superb as this character. No one else even comes close to his portrayal.

Since then, I have watched it more times than I can count. The story is wonderful (it is a combination of several of the Scarlet Pimpernel books), the acting is superb, the locations and costumes are awe-inspiring, Jane Seymour and Ian McKellan are fantastic, and of course, Anthony Andrews steals the show! I can't say enough good about this production.

Buy this DVD and find out for yourself how good it really is!
