Movie Reviews of The Scarlet Pimpernel

Movie Review: finally after all these years of looking
Summary: 5 Stars

For years I have tried unsuccessfully to find this movie. I graduated from highschool in 1987 and we watched this during one of my high school years in English class. We read the book, then watched the movie and I absolutely fell in love with this movie and never forgot it. I found the book that was aired on the Hallmark Channel, with pictures from the movie in it. I just loved Anthony Andrews and would dream that I was Jane Seymour. Even when I was in my 20's I was dating a guy and we watched and recorded it at his parent's house. The sad thing is that we broke up and the recorded copy was left at his parents house and I never got it back. I contacted Hallmark to see if they had it available, but because
it was not a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie they did not have a copy.
I kept searching over the years, video stores, my movie club, even
on regular t.v. NO luck. Then I had an idea to search on Amazon and
here it is, I am so excited, after more than twenty years I will finally
have it to watch over and over again. I agree, this movie should be on
t.v. more and made into a motion film picture. This movie is my all time
favorites of my favorites! I love the acting, the romance, the suspense,
the history of it, the wardrobes and the love between Sir Percy and
Marguerite and much more than I have room to write.

Movie Review: The seek him here they seek him there
Summary: 5 Stars

Them Frenchies seek him everywhere.
Is he in Heaven?
Is he in Hell?
That damned elusive pimpernel.

By Sir Percy Blakeney/The Scarlet Pimpernel (Anthony Andrews)

It is the French revolution and everone is losing their heads. Sir Percy Blakeney must fake being ridicules and may even lose the love of his life Lady Marguerite Blakeney (Jane Seymour.) This is necessary to save their friends from the guillotine.

How long can he pull this off while right next to him is Citizen Chauvelin (Ian McKellen) who is trying to track down The Scarlet Pimpernel. He even threatens Marguerite's with the life of her brother to find the pimpernel.

The story, originally a play then a novel has been remade and in some ways improved through the years. However, this version will always be the classic that by others are measured.

This Play that still has the feel of a play was made into several films. The most popular is the 1934 version starring Leslie Howard. It is hard to improve on that version. However, I think it has a rival in this production. We have a little more swordplay and a few of the character were more fleshed out.

Scarlet Pimpernel (1934)

Movie Review: Sink me! But it's demmed brilliant!
Summary: 5 Stars

Hopefully "The Scarlet Pimpernel" will someday make its way back to the big screen, but in the meantime this television version holds the place as probably the best one to date. First and foremost, the script never has a dull moment, as it's jam-packed full of romance, intrigue, suspense, and adventure. The action continuously bounces back and forth between England and revolutionary France, where the mysterious Scarlet Pimpernel is saving innocent lives from the cruel blade of Madame Guillotine. Anthony Andrews, as foppish Sir Percy Blakeney, an English aristocrat with a big secret, never fails to deliver. His droll, dry delivery of Percy's lines contrasts brilliantly with his dashing Pimpernel persona. Jane Seymour is a perfectly lovely Marguerite, entirely believeable as a spirited French actress caught between her loyalties. And Sir Ian McKellen is delightfully menacing as Citizen Paul Chauvelin, an agent of the French Republic and Marguerite's spurned lover. The plot is fast-paced, and every scene is as well done as the one before. It is truly a classic to be treasured. Unfortunately, the DVD is only a basic transfer and has no bonus material, but at least it's finally getting its due!

Movie Review: A wonderful mix of seriousness and folly
Summary: 5 Stars

The Scarlet Pimpernel is a wonderful story by itself. I first saw the movie in my high school French class and I fell in love with it. The plot, outlining the story of an English master of disguises sneaking the condemned nobility of revolutionary France out of danger right from beneath Robespierre's and Chauvelin's (Ian McKellen) noses, is thrilling to watch. Anthony Andrews is perfect for his role in the movie as the Scarlet Pimpernel, Percy Blakeney. To everyone he appears to be a completely vain, airheaded fop (one of the reasons I enjoy the movie so much--he's just so over the top). To the secret league of gentlemen he commands, he is a genius for thinking up schemes. Jane Seymore, as always, plays her part as the beautiful Marguerite Saint Juste wonderfully. This movie is wonderfully complex, and a joy to watch. Though slightly hoakey at times, I personally think it is very well done. There are plenty of laughs, and it is filled with cleverness, romance, adventure, betrayal, and is also fairly historically acurate. It's a personal favorite.

Movie Review: Simply Amazing
Summary: 5 Stars

When I first started watching this movie I was completly entranced. Halfway through I had to stop the movie becuase my family and I were going to the theatre to see another movie. The whole time I kept thinking of The Scarlet Pimpernel and was wondering what was going to happen. When I got back from the other movie, which, by the way, paled in comparison, I asked my brother where I could possibly buy this movie for cheap, becuase I do not have that much money. He then told me it frequently went in and out of print and that got me worried. So I went to the only place that I thought would have the movie, Amazon.com. [...] It arrived with perfect timing and the DVD works like any newly bought movie from a video store. Hopefully this review has helped someone to decide in buying this movie, which is clean, hilrious, and romantic and appropriate for everyone. It is now one of my FAVORITE movies. Thanks for reading!
