Movie Review: Two Classic Era stars in late-career westerns

DIRECT SOURCE issues unrestored full screen movies (as many as 4 on dual-layered DVDs) that have strong audio. Some extras are included on their singles, doubles and double play discs. Transfers aren't perfect but are quite watchable and always reasonably priced. I own several of their singles and boxes and am a satisfied customer.
In THE RUTHLESS FOUR, Van Heflin is a grizzled old Nevada gold prospector who keeps ending up with the wrong partners. Gilbert Roland is an old friend who's convinced that Heflin betrayed him 6 years earlier. George Hilton is the kid the miner asks to help bring back the riches from a big strike and Klaus Kinski is an assassin often disguised as a preacher who seems to have control over Hilton. A fine story enhanced by bleak scenery that has faint resonations of TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE (1948).
Although produced by the Turner company, compared to "Ruthless Four," BORDER SHOOTOUT is a throwaway and a sad farewell to the western genre for Glenn Ford, in his penultimate theatrical release. This is also Syrian-born Ansara's second to last non-TV movie. The story is badly adapted from Elmore Leonard's novel "The Law at Randado," for rather than entertain, it often confuses the viewer. Here, the arthritic and obviously past-70 Ford is given top billing despite having only a supporting role.
SYNOPSIS--
Sheriff Danaher (Ford) appoints deputies in several towns when he's unable to conduct a solo countywide investigation of cattle being rustled for the U.S. Cavalry. The crimes are blamed on local Mexicans by the man actually responsible for the thefts, the herd's owner. A replacement for one of Ford's hired lawmen (Cody Glenn) is urged by the duplicitous cattle owner (Jeff Kaake) to hang the two Mexicans he arrested for the crime, an act that turns local townspeople against the young deputy.
