Movie Reviews of The RocketMovie Review: OK. Worth Buying. Summary: 3 Stars
I gotta wonder if Roy Dupuis can play a character who is in any way happy with his life! Rocket Richard is portrayed and a very unhappy person in this movie, which does not present a single moment of joy in his life. The movie does give the standard portrayal, right or wrong, of how rough hockey was in the 1940's and 1950's, and those portrayals are the best part of the movie. The anti-Quebecois theme is a little overdone though. All one has to know is that there have been several French Canadian Prime Ministers, including a period in the 1950's. The elitism and exploitation of athletes that Richard experienced was hardly unique to French Canadians, or hockey, especially in those days. I also think that just about any Canadian could attest to the fact that we hear far nastier comments made about people of different races than we do about French Canadians. I personally have never in my life heard any racist comments directed against French Canadians, nor witnessed any racist incident directed against French Canadians.
I also understand that the Habs had a lock on French Canadian players in those days, which explained the lack of French Canadian players on other teams.
In the end though, it's an entertaining movie, and does capture a lot of the real feelings that existed in those days. I would have liked it better if Maurice would have had just a few happy moments though!
