Movie Reviews of The RobeMovie Review: One of the Best "Biblical Epics" Summary: 5 Stars
This 1953, multiple-Academy Award winning film is easily one of the best of the Biblical Epics, and was the "prequel" to "Demetrius and The Gladiators," which continued the story precisely where it left off in this presentation. Featuring some of the most powerful performances to that time, it is the inspirational tale of the conversion of Marcellus Gallio, the Roman Centurion (superbly portrayed by Richard Burton) who supervised the crucifixion of Jesus, and the price he and his lady-love (Jean Simmons) paid for their faith. In the story, Marcellus and the freed Greek slave Demetrius (Victor Mature) come into guardianship over the robe worn by Jesus at the crucifixion, a situation around which the story is woven. Though the performance is much-criticized as being "over the top," Jay Robinson's portrayal of the Emperor Caligula will grab your attention, and does reflect the thoroughly evil and dominant position that this emperor occupied at the time. It would be a mistake to own this film without also possessing the sequel. A very touching and inspirational movie classic.
Movie Review: The Robe(1953) (I saw it on Netflix Instant) A Classic. Summary: 5 Stars
I recently saw this at a Pauline's Catholic Book store and later came home to look for it on Netflix instant and lo and behold It was there and I watched it,Great Movie,Timeless,It is amazing how Christianity(Read Catholicism) has Survived 2,000+ years despite the Romans,Pagans,Barbarians,Muslims,Heretics,Luther,Calvin,Zwingli,So-called Humanists or Atheists,Darwinists and So-called Born Again Christians and many Enemies and Sects who have tried but Failed miserably to Bring The Church down. The movie has great acting and while you never see Jesus directly,it is quite impressionable and humbling, for the Roman who crucified Our Lord had come to regret his actions and in the process came to realize the Truth and was no longer on a mission to destroy the Robe he won in a Bet and that cursed him with Anxiety and Bad health,To meet back up with his Freed/Runaway Slave later Friend and St.Peter, and Miriam,It is a beautiful Story and movie, sadly this was the best Era for these Movies and they don't make them like this anymore in this "Secular" and distant age.
Movie Review: Sequel to The Robe Summary: 5 Stars
Did you all know that there was a sequel filmed to the Robe? It is called "Demetrius and the Gladiators". It leaves off where The Robe ended and continues with the life of Victor Mature's character. Jay Robinson returns in his excellent performance of Caligula. It was filmed in the same style and epic method as The Robe and I found it was just as inspiring as the first movie. Both of these movies would make a nice gift to a Church going friend.
I would just like to add that I wish 20th Century Fox would release a Collectors Edition of this film. Considering the importance and history of this film you would think they could at least clean up the Master Copy a bit. I think that they have not done it before now because the film's content has to do with Christianity and that is currently out of fashion. I am sure the Religious overtones of the movie would turn off most Americans now days. Sad.
Movie Review: A timeless classic Summary: 5 Stars
Absolutely one of the best films ever made!
This move encapsulates the essence of what Jesus died for! We watch a pompous tribune turn from being a self centered angry gambler and drunkard to a man tortured by his crimes against humanity when he crucifies Christ. When he sees the Light, his life is changed, and in the end he makes the ultimate sacrifice for the one thing worth dying for: one's faith in Christ!
How tremendously sad that this movie was so moving in it's initial release that it won several academy awards, yet nowadays, the majority of people in Hollywood would be amongst the crowd at the end yelling "death" I was moved to tears at the attributes so clearly defined in all characters. The picture of what occurred during the first century in relation to Christianity was clearly painted. What a marvelous movie.
Bravo!!
Movie Review: Does not get much better than this! Summary: 5 Stars
I had the pleasure of watching this again last night. What a wonderful film. Richard Burton stars as Marcellous, a Roman centurian who oversaw the crucifixion of Jesus of Nazereth. He becomes deeply affected by this and basically looses his mind saying "were you out there," to anyone who mentions the event in the stangest tone. Meanwhile he has fallen in love with Diana,(Jean Simmons), and partakes on a journey to destroy the robe in order to lift the curse he thinks he is under. Don't want to spoil the story for anyone here, but this is one entertaining and inspiring movie. Look out especially for Jay Robinson's performance as the evil Caligula, it's a riot. Also check out the sequal "demetrius and the gladiators", with Victor Mature reprising his role as Demetrius.
