Movie Reviews of The Return of the KingMovie Review: The one from my childhood Summary: 5 Stars
There is no point in owning this movie for anything other than nostalgia purposes, but that's what I wanted.
This is absolutely not a review on the *content* of the movie -- I am giving it five-stars because I wanted the movie they used to show on TV when I was a kid. This is the one with the cheesy "Frodo of the Nine Fingers, and the Ring of Doom!" song. It's exactly the one they used to show -- obvious commecial breaks and everything.
There is not much continuity from the Rankin-Bass "Hobbit" to this movie (the Hobbit movie was better at story-telling than this one). There is way too much repetition within this movie. There are so many characters that are not explained at all -- just seen and then dropped. It's all choppy and confusing. And it's very cheesy. But it's exactly like I remembered, and I'm so glad that I get to sing along. My kids think I'm nutsos. So what?
Movie Review: Cute kiddie version of LOTR Summary: 5 Stars
From what I understand, this cartoon was created more for children than for adults. The same goes for "The Hobbit." So it's not suprising that the animation is not spectacular. I personally thought the animation was excellent, since they were drawn by Japanese anime artists. I really liked their representations of all the LOTR characters. As for the voice-overs, I don't see any problems either. I think they were pretty good, especially Gollum. The songs were cute, although I can understand how they can be irritable to some people. Just remember, it was made for kids! Purist of Tolkien's lore will probably hate this movie, as it "simplifies" the story, but what do you expect from a child version? I really liked all three movies a lot, despite all of it's supposed short-comings. If you're not a nitpicking fan of LOTR, you will also enjoy them also.
Movie Review: A must-have for any Tolkien fan! Summary: 5 Stars
This movie covers the second half of the trilogy by JRR Tolkien, and does a reasonably good job. Once again, the voice quality is quite good, as is the music in general. The dialogue is rather good. They do get a little too songy, although "Where there's a whip, there's a way" is one that we all know by heart and sing at times when we're doing something difficult! The animation is rather good given the time in which it was done, and it's not "cutesy" or Disney-ish. Yes, just as in the other movie, there are plot holes and they had difficulties squashing the entire storyline into the amount of time they had available. Still, the movie did a stellar job of introducing thousands of viewers to an incredible book series, and it deserves a place of honor for that accomplishment.
Movie Review: Classic Summary: 5 Stars
I am guessing that most of the reviewers are forgetting that the sound experience that we have on movies today was not done when this cartoon was created. The Last Unicorn is another classic done during the same time period & the soundtrack is a wonderful one, but not that clear on the actual movie. We didn't notice back then because they were all pretty much like that, but we notice now since we have become so spoiled. This is a classic trilogy. It takes me back to childhood & I must say it sounds & looks better now than it did on that late '70's TV. The best part is that there are no commercials. My daughter was just as enchanted as I was. We can't wait for the "live action" version to come out.
Movie Review: Check the printed scene index in the case... Summary: 5 Stars
Simply put...this is a classic that follows in the brilliance of it's predecessor "The Hobbit". I did, however, find it funny that Warner Brothers would have released this movie in it's current packaging. If you check the printed scene index on the inside of the case, you'll find that the scenes listed are actually the scenes from the Ralph Bakshi film "Lord of the Rings" and have nothing to do with this release of "Return of the King". (Heck, if you look at scene 32, you'll see that they didn't even bother to get the spelling correct) But I guess that's just a trivial issue...who cares...it's still a great movie.
