Movie Reviews of The Quiet Man (Collector's Edition)

Movie Review: The Quiet Man
Summary: 5 Stars

In My humble opinion, This was the greatest movie ever made. If you are a fan of John Wayne and having the lovely Maureen O'Hara along side of him, you can fail. It has made my day and many more to follow.

Movie Review: Beautifully Filmed and Told Story of Love and Honor
Summary: 5 Stars

What a bunch of blarney. The Quiet Man is crammed with so many Irish stereotypes, I'm mildly surprised there aren't any leprachans prancing about. Watching The Quiet Man takes more than the usual amount of suspension of disbelief but it's all in good fun. John Ford took a quaint and poorly written Irish story about manliness and turned it into an Irish Taming of the Shrew with a bit of the usual John Wayne swagger and the obligatory macho fistfight. Maureen O'Hara is wonderful and beautiful and her spirited performance makes the movie.

Ford was a bit odd about being of Irish heritage. He went around telling people he had a very Irish name but used an ordinary name for business. In actuality, his birth name was John Martin Feeney. Says so on his birth certificate. To this day, many people (including Amazon's employee and may professional critics and film guides) insist erroneously that his birth name was Sean Aloysius O'Feeney. Ford made a huge deal out of filming on location in his ancestral county and was treated like some sort of native son.

The movie itself is a beautifully filmed and told story about love and honor. Sean Thorton comes home from America to Ireland with a terrible secret and falls in love with the beautiful and spirited Mary-Kate. Along the way he must contend with her blowhard brother played by the always reliable Victor McLaglen. Everyone lives happily ever after, even the brother. The movie is relaxed and sweet and everything is played with an agreeable tongue-in-cheek humor. For any fan of Ford, Wayne or O'Hara this is a must own.

Movie Review: The Protestant Priest
Summary: 5 Stars

We ordered this DVD after returning from a tour of Ireland where we visited the town of Cong where much of this movie was filmed. After the tour, the guide had some of the tour members dress up as characters in the film. Having not seen this movie previously, we wanted to view the places we had seen as well as the plot and character development.

Movie Review: The Quiet-Surprising Performance
Summary: 5 Stars

I was suprised by John Wayne's performance in this movie. He is generally in movies that are a type of "shoot em up", but he gives a wonderful understated performance. Maureen O'Hara is good, but also played this type of character many times. It is great though to hear her commentary. She tells fascinating and amusing recollections of the actors, the times and Ireland (she was born and raised in Dublin). I highly recommend watching the commentary after you have seen the movie. Ms. O'Hara also a good story as to how the movie was a favorite of John Ford's and how he had to deal his way into getting the moive made in the first place and in Ireland (for the most part). The suppoting characters are wonderful, especially Barry Fitzgerald

Movie Review: The BEST of Wayne and O'Hara!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is my favorite John Wayne/Maureen O'Hara movies. It is a wonderful story, written beautifully, set in Ireland. Wayne IS the "Quiet Man". He moves back to the family home in Ireland after a personal crisis happens to him in the States. He meets his "Spinster" neighbor, played by O'Hara, almost as soon as his feet hit Irish soil......and he's smitten. The Old Word ways of the community and the "red head" personality of O'Hara make a heart warming story.
This is the favorite movie in our house. Wayne is my husband and he says I'm O'Hara. This is our third copy! We play them out!
