Movie Reviews of The Quick and the DeadMovie Review: Much better than advertised Summary: 5 Stars
Anytime you got Gene Hackman as a heavy totin' a 6 gun you've got some serious potential. Here you've got a real unappreciated gem I guess cause a feminist gunfighter smacks the genre right in the mouth. However, Sharon Stone manages somehow to be credible...it still blows my mind having grown up with classic westerns. This movie is pure entertainment and I even enjoy Leonardo DeCaprio prancing around and showing off for his (spoiler alert) estranged father in Mr.Herod, self appointed king of the local 'ville'. Fun, funny, and with healthy doses of action. Lance Henricksen is one of my favorites as a cocky gunslinger that enjoys doing aerobics off the back of his horse. I can't even deduct points for my natural dislike for Russell Crowe cause he's actually very good as a reformed killer, and handles a six gun pretty spiffilly. A fun movie if you can muster a new set of eyes when you watch. 5 cartridges
Movie Review: Flawlessly executed (no pun intended) Summary: 5 Stars
Sam Raimi's "The Quick and the Dead" is basically a stereotypical western with stereotypical characters in a stereotypical plot but filmed by master Sam Raimi who uses these stereotypes to create a film so pure in the genre that it surprises. Each scene is painstakingly crafted to achieve the purpose intended, Raimi wastes no scene. A stable of fine actors is used most notably the legendery Gene Hackman, but the real talent in the film is the always interesting point of view Raimi places the camera to achieve the desired effect. This film is stylish and constantly takes chances with the believability of the characters, but it all works and Raimi delivers plenty of humor, action and thrills and enough violence to make Sam Peckinpah blush. Hard core western film buffs may scoff at Raimi's camera work, but for the rest it should be highly entertaining.
Movie Review: An Unexpectedly Good Western Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this DVD with limited expectations, fearing that Sharon Stone might make an unlikely character/hero in a Western, but willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. The Amazon review also left me thinking that this would be a derivative "B" film. I viewed this film during a "movie nite" with friends and we were uniformly pleasantly surprised. I would call this film a "Western Noir", with a nice plot twist at the end that justified/explained the protagonist's/Stone's actions in the film. The star-studded cast was compelling, and the film held our respective attentions. Video (viewed on a 10' home theater screen) and audio quality were both very good. True, the plot is limited and basic, but I accepted this as part and parcel of the gendre. Many stylish camera shots also contributed to our enjoyment of this film.
Movie Review: THANK YOU SAM RAIMI FOR THIS MOVIE Summary: 5 Stars
Great movie, the quick and the dead is to me a real homage to the clasics spaghetti westerns of Sergio Leone and Clint Eastwood,so if you like this movie you have to like a Fistful of Dollars,For a few dollars more and the good the bad and the ugly. Sharon Stone performance is very good,Gene Hackman what can i say about him? a real fine actor. Russell Crowe a new actor who was given in my opinion the best scenes in the movie. And to be honest i never imagine Di Caprio in a western but is performance fit very well. This movie is very good from a certain point of you.if you are looking for a drama ,intence story don t wacht this one ,but in the contrarie if you want action without limits you have te see it. So thank you Sam Riami to give us a new spaghetty western like the old ones.
Movie Review: NOT L'AMOUR BUT GREAT JUST THE SAME Summary: 5 Stars
In the first place, one thing needs to be made clear. This movie is NOT based on the great book by Louis L'Amour. But the story and movie are great just the same.Gene Hackman stars as the consummate western nasty who brings several very quick gunfighters together for the shear morbid fun of watching them kill each other in gunfights. Being the supposed quickest gunfighter of them all, Hackman plans to kill the last one standing. But a stranger comes to town among the would be winners and changes things for everyone. Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe and, of course, Sharon Stone provide very memorable performances.
