Movie Reviews of The PunisherMovie Review: I just punished my toilet...THOMAS JANE STYLE, BEEATCH! Summary: 5 Stars
Thank God there's a superhero out there with balls. It's pretty much standard-operating-procedure for good-guys in action movies to turn soft at the end and stop short of exacting their revenge on the object of their obsession. You know the routine: hero levels gun to bad-guy's face, bad-guy begs for his life, gun starts shaking in hero's hand, hero questions his motives and lets bad-guy live...until two seconds later when bad-guy, in a most dishonorable (though exceedingly predictable) fashion, tries to kill the hero, and the hero is forced to put him down in self-defense. Even Schwarzenegger was not immune to this formula. But you won't see that kind of crap in the Punisher. Thomas Jane smokes Travolta without hesitation and basically pees on his ashes. Now that's what I'm talking about. Sure, there's the obligatory scene where some dumb broad (played by Rebecca Romain-Stamos) in a teary-eyed plea says some bull to the effect of: "What makes you any better than the people you're trying to kill?" But Thomas Jane then proceeds to beat the hell out of her. Okay, so that didn't happen, but in every movie there must always be some suspension of disbelief.
Anyway, to put some perspective on my review: I'm the kind of guy who likes Steven Segal and the Rock (except for Scorpion Douche). If you too enjoy such cinematographic masterpieces, I'm quite confident you'll love this Punisher remake. If you don't, then why the hell would you be looking at Punisher reviews in the first place?
Movie Review: A MUST SEE! Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great comic-book-to-film creation. I really enjoyed the plot, the action, and the acting. The shoot-outs are filmed in such a way that you can actually tell who is shooting at who, the good guys actually get hurt, and the bad guys are evil enough that you want to see them "get-their's".
The Punisher is a film that has that "IT" factor that a movie needs to be successful: predictable enough to expect certain things, but not so predictable that the movie is a wash.
What I really enjoyed about the film was the combination of good fight scenes with good "thinking revenge" scenes - the way The Punisher uses his brain to create situations that have the "bad guys" fighting amongst themselves adds flavor to the film.
I think The Punisher is one of the coolest comic book heroes because he is one of the most believable super heroes - no special powers, but he is on a real mission to get real "bad guys." It makes him a very interesting character indeed. After his entire family is ordered to be murdered by a money-laundering kingpin, FBI agent Frank Castle begins his crusade of revenge against the entire group of gangsters. What follows is an entertaining film that is worth purchasing.
I waited way too long to finally watch this film. It holds its own against any other comic book film that has been produced. So don't wait any longer; buy it, rent it, or borrow it today.
See ya next review.
Movie Review: Wow, it's better than Daredevil! Summary: 5 Stars
Yes, the Punisher was better than Daredevil! Hallelujah! A seasoned comic book fan, my knees trembled with anticipation when first I heard of a Punisher movie. A tiny thread of doubt crept upon me when I learned that Thomas Jane would be playing our tortured hero. And upon hearing negative reviews from nearly all of my close(well comic-versed) friends, I didn't even see the Punisher on the big screen. But it came out on DVD today and I bought it--a necessary part of my collection even if it lacked a bit. No disappointment here. As usual, John Travolta is a convincing and well-studied villian with sincere emotions. Overall, the acting is quite superb; including Tom Jane who dove into the role whole-heartedly and captured the Frank C. that we have grown to adore in our comic reading. A side note, if you don't read the comic, you should. As previously noted by another reviewed, it does stay close to the comic storyline which all of us fanboys and girls will appreciate. Even if you dont' follow the comic, it's an excellent action movie with some tremendous fight scenes both physical and with guns and various other machinery. And somewhere in the story of a vigilant who seeks justice after the brutal murder of his entire family, the director and writers manage to punch up a few light-hearted moments to ease the mood a bit. I know this is a movie that will live in my DVD player for at least a month before being resigned to my shelves alongside my other favorites.
Movie Review: vastly under-rated movie Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of the best comic book movies I have ever seen, and I think would be an enjoyable movie for people that don't like comic books. It is true that the plot is not really original. The plot is basically the plot of Mad Max. A scene in this movie is even inspired by the scene in Mad Max where Max runs to his family just after they have been run over. But what this movie lacks in an original plot, it makes up for in other ways. Thomas Jane is great as The Punisher and I don't think there is anyone else who could have played him better. In fact, I'm not sure why Jane wasn't chosen to play parts such as Batman or Spiderman in the past. He's what a superhero should be. The movie is refreshing in that, as the director explains in the commentary track, there are virtually no CGI effects. The movie is stripped down and raw with nothing extra added, just like the Punisher himself. I really get tired of looking at phony CGI effects. This movie was shot old-school and is meant play like an old sam peckinpaw movie. The movie has a great soundtrack and there is some suprisingly good acting in this movie, especially from the supporting cast. I think the critics unfairly bashed this movie. The movie is pretty violent in keeping with the comic book. However, there are some light-hearted moments too with the supporting cast. Can't wait for Punisher 2!
Movie Review: Pretty Dam* Good Summary: 5 Stars
I am not a comic fan but this is by FAR AND AWAY the BEST Comic Movie of all time. Seem's like the Comic Punisher fans are "Punishing" this take on the character but really if you look at the movie instead of the character it is a pretty good action flick.
Very Mad Max in your face stuff and I like that kind of "shady" hero. Because a real hero is just a human with all the faults of a human.
The Character does though have a keen sense of right and wrong and ultimate justice. Really, Frank Castle is not a hero in the film. Just a man out to set thing's straight.
Jane is the real star of this flick and does a great job. I think they could have got someone a little better instead of Travolta though, I would have liked to seen Al Pacino in the role of Mobster Howard Saint.
The best and most disturbing part is the whole family being whacked scene. Notice how the tension was built up before it actually happened i.e. no music. and little kids playing at the family dinner table.
Very Sergio Leone "Once Upon a Time in the West" stuff where Fonda smiles and then shoots a little kid.
It made the emotional response for Frank's revenge even greater.
Along with Gladiator one of the Best "Revenge" Movies of the decade.
