Movie Reviews of The Punisher [Blu-ray]

Movie Review: Great, fun, blu ray "Friday night" movie
Summary: 5 Stars

Lots of fun, a rollicking body count, good action and a bit of humor. What more could one ask?

Movie Review: A Flawless HD Transfer Missing All the Great Extras though
Summary: 4 Stars

Call me Crazy But, I think all 3 Punisher Films are Very Good
They are Unique Violent Pieces of Films (That are a Throw-back to The vigilante Films of the 70's!)
That doesn't get nearly enough attention Maybe because the Subject Matter is to Dark for kids!
Or maybe because unlike The Dark Knight, Frank Castle kills all The guilty and lives up to his name!
It's hard to gain a Solid Audience for a Rated R Comic Book Movie
Each Punisher Film has been Different but, Holds the Main Concept of Who Frank Castle Really is.

This being the Second Re-Launch of The "Thomas Jane" Punisher (2004)
As a Action Film it's solid with a Great Story/Script That Breaks down
The Back Story of Frank Castle
On paper Thomas Jane sounds like a Poor choice
But, he Brings allot to Both the Film and The Character
The Film is very much like a spaghetti western
John Travolta makes one of the Best/Under Rated comic book villains in the last 20yrs.
Mostly 'Because he plays it so Real and Straight
Plus there was a Strange Set up Travolta becoming Jigsaw to Bad the Sequel was scraped and Changed up to Punisher: War Zone (With yet another Under-Rated Actor becoming Frank Castle)

The Fight Scene between Thomas Jane and Kevin Nash looks so Physical and spontaneous to this day it still makes me Smile

The Blu Ray Transfer is Amazing the Negative is the Lack of all the Great extras from the Standard DVD
The Audio is Stunning with (2 Tracks) Dolby Digital Surround EX & DTS-ES 6.1

Maybe Lionsgate will do a Second BR Version Fully Loaded with Both Special Edition Extras!?!?!

A Must have Action Flick for the HD Format 9.5/10

Movie Review: A very good bad movie is hard to find.
Summary: 4 Stars

Right off the bat, this movie is not for comic purists. "The Punisher" was a creature for darkened inner city streets in the original incarnation. Here, to help differentiate it from every other movie since "Batman", the director decided to change the setting to sunny Miami. I won't argue the choice because it did help give the movie it's own personality.

Thomas Jane strikes the right chord in the title role. After the brutal murder of his entire family, Frank Castle takes justice into his own hands. Or, more appropriately, he decides to punish the drug/money laundering kingpin (John Travolta) who ordered the hit.

Travolta seems to be having a blast chewing the scenery as Howard Saint. Motivated by Castle's "betrayal" of his youngest son, who is killed in a drug bust gone wrong, Saint sicks his hired assassins on Castle. All of whom meet a bloody end. Will Patton, an underrated actor who manages to make any movie more interesting just by showing up for work, is Saint's right hand man.

Along the way, Castle befriends the fellow outcasts in his run down apartment building. Most notably is Rebecca Romijn, apparently trying to build her "acting" resumé while doing a movie that didn't require her to bathe in blue latex before every shot.

For some reason, in spite of my best judgment, I enjoy this movie to no end. It's stilted and predictable. The acting goes from very good to very bad. The ending is almost laughable in it's staging. But I enjoy the ride.

Movie Review: A Pleasant Surprise, Including The Price
Summary: 4 Stars

Before I begin, let me state that this Blu-Ray is of decent quality; not sharp the entire picture but most the time and good overall.....and a steal at the current price here at $9.99.

When I saw this at the theater three or four years ago, I was surprised how good this movie was, not stupid as I figured. Apparently a number of people agreed as a sequel was spawned. In other words, this turned out to be a popular film and subsequent DVD.

It's another one of those based-on-a-comic book hero films that seem to be sprouting up all over the past few years. Some of these guys are pretty dark heroes. This is an example. It was more of a pretty brutal revenge-crime movie. It's a rough movie, pure and simple......not the sweetness of Superman and Lois Lane.

Some of the action is ludicrous but the most ridiculous of all - the fight against the huge Russian, is actually the most fun of the action scenes. The rest is just plain mean as the hero's entire family gets wiped out by gunman and "The Punisher" (Thomas Jane) goes after them after almost being killed himself.

A smart aspect of this film was inserting a bit of humor in it, such as the two nerds down the hallway who befriend "The Punisher."

The sometimes-juvenile but interesting action scenes, the diverse characters in here and the humor all combine to make this much better than anticipated.

Movie Review: Cool Marvel Comics adaptation; Decent HD presentation
Summary: 4 Stars

The Blu-ray disc of THE PUNISHER looks superior to the DVD version, but none of the extras from the DVD are included here.

The "studder" issue noted by other reviewers is present ONLY when selecting the DTS audio option (which is the default on the menu). To play the movie without any issues, simply choose the DOLBY DIGTIAL audio track and the movie will play back perfectly. This strange issue affects all 4 of the initial Lionsgate titles. Again, to get around it, simply choose the Dolby audio option.

Hopefully the Blu-ray camp will begin releasing better discs soon, but for the meantime, THE PUUNISER looks cool in HD.
