Movie Reviews of The Prowler

Movie Review: Really 3 and a Half Stars.....
Summary: 4 Stars

Sometimes life sucks. But try living in the 50's and reciving a dear john letter. And then getting murdered. Crap like that is what makes up the small cult flick a geniune one. The story is about a girl and a soroty house that is going to a party! OH YEAH! DRUGS SEX AND ALCHOL!! LIFE IS GOOD! Anyways.... so the teens start being whorory and skanky and start to die! yay! So the best scene in the movie is when the survivor is running from the killer and when he stops on the stairs and looks at her i gt creeped out. I say it is a rent but what the hell do i know!!!

Movie Review: Nothing in between...
Summary: 3 Stars

I had high hopes for "The Prowler". Yes, the death scenes and gore are good. However they are few and far between and what you get stuck with in the middle is some awfully boring and painful filler.

The whole girl running around with a cop trying to solve the "mystery" of the prowler is VERY badly acted, and so completely lame and far fetched that it leaves you praying the movie will end soon.

Why would a woman who was chased and attacked make it her personal mission to try and discover who the pervert is only moments after being ambushed ???? Oh the humanity!

A horror movie can't just rely on the death scenes alone. There has to be SOME interesting stuff going on in between. "The Prowler" has none of this. "The Prowler" as a character is a pretty cool concept. He looks bad a*s, but we just don't get enough of him. I will say that I was a little surprised as to who "The Prowler" actually was once revealed. I think I was so bored in between that I didn't even bother guessing.

My best suggestion if you want to watch "The Prowler" would be to watch the first 20 minutes or so.....and then just fast forward to each and every death scene afterwards. You wont be missing anything in between I promise! As always, Tom Savini is masterful with his effects...

Let the last 5-10 minutes play and save yourself everything in between. You can thank me later. ;-)

Movie Review: Painfully boring
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this film knowing that Tom Savini did the gore effects...well that didnt save this horrorible slasher. First off most of the movie is just people walking around in the dark with no action, talking, or plot going on at all. The murders, while nice and gory are few and far between. The killers outfit and the story on why he is killing is soooo lame I want to laugh and cry at the same time. The ending is pitiful and not surprising at all. I love horror movies, but this one is not worth the time. Get My Bloody Valentine instead.

Movie Review: Standard slasher that is boring at times, low on scares, but big on blood and gore!
Summary: 2 Stars

Joseph Zito's "The Prowler" is a somewhat boring and formulaic slasher flick, low on scares, but big on blood and gore kill scenes. While the plot is average at the very best, very mundane and definitely full of cliches, this movie does provide some great death scenes, but this is the only area where this film really shines. Indeed, very good blood and gore scenes for a film made in the early 80s, and the killer is somewhat creepy in the beginning, but this movie largely fails to produce any element of true horror, lacking in atmosphere, style and suspense.

The major problems with this flick are as follows: it is so very predictable, the acting is pretty bad overall, no suspense, lacking cohesiveness, very little atmosphere, low on style, poor theatrical structure highlighted or lowlighted if you will by several inexplicable instances (one really long stretch) of long and boring scenes where virtually nothing takes place, and as I eluded to above, the killer's prowess is drastically diminished towards the end of the movie when you actually see his face.

While the identity of the killer is supposed to be a mystery in "The Prowler", it really is not very hard to pick him out if you have seen enough of these slasher flicks. I think this hurts "The Prowler" a little bit, and I was disappointed in this fact, especially given the lack of prowess of the killer when his identity is revealed and the subsequent disposition of the film. However, the worst thing about this movie is without a doubt the thirty plus minutes in the middle of this movie where absolutely nothing happens, not even an attempt at character or plot development...it's just filler space with atrocious acting.

There are some great death scenes though, and an unexpected one in the end, and as I said, the movie does well with the gore and special effects. I think if you enjoy slasher films with a below average to average plot, but with some great kills, you might not be disappointed with this movie. Succinctly put, this is a very average slasher flick which due to the lack of atmosphere, style, and suspense is largely ineffective at eliciting any real horror or scares whatsoever within an experienced horror movie audience...it is more of gore and borefest for the most part. With that being said, I have seen much, much worse. I would recommend this movie to gore fans and slasher film completists.
