Movie Reviews of The Prowler

Movie Review: 80s Slasher Triumph
Summary: 4 Stars

Being a fan of the 80's slasher genre, I thought it was obligatory to see this film.

Directed by Joe Zito, this film pleased this horror/suspense fan.

The editing was so superbly done that it only adds to the rise of the plot.
Tight and choppy, yet, at the same time, maintaining an odd continuity that pleased the thrill-seeker in me.

Vicky Dawson played the "surviving victim" with such method, that one truly entered the screen and not once did I think: "Oh no, where'd they get this bimbo?" Her affect and countenance was on cue and certainly delivered the scares and heightened the suspense.

Christopher Goutman never really adds any flavor to the scenes and is cinematically no more than an appendage.

This film doens't pretend to be a who-done-it. There is no true effort to deduce who is the prowler. This film takes the viewer on a true rollercoaster ride of fright and relief.

Movie Review: Underrated, unusual slasher gets A-grade DVD treatment
Summary: 4 Stars

To say THE PROWLER is any kind of great film is simply untrue. However, the whole thing has an eerie, unsettling, dream-like quality to it that carries it through the slower patches and makes the film's near-total lack of coherency and logic much easier to take. The tension is kept taught throughout, and with top-notch scoring, photography, gore effects and direction, makes for a surprisingly effective and repeatable horror film. Just make sure you watch it in the dead of night! The Blue Underground DVD has a fine anamorphic transfer that is as good as the original negatives will allow, some fascinating on-set footage of the make-up effects, an impressive stills and poster gallery that is definitely worth ploughing through and a superb, hugely entertaining commentary with director Joseph Zito and make-up maestro Tom Savini. Very much recommended.

Movie Review: Forgotten 80's gem with Tom Savini effects
Summary: 4 Stars

Joseph Zito (who directed Friday the 13th 4, which was the best in the long running series) directed this forgotten 80's slasher gem, which is made all the more memorable thanks to the unbelievably gruesome gore effects from FX legend Tom Savini. The Prowler follows the basic 80's slasher formula (revenge) to a tee, but Zito weaves some better than average set pieces, and Savini's grisly effects are the true star of the show. The pitchfork scene is definitely worth noting here, an you'll never look at one the same way again. There's some pretty good extras on the DVD to boot, including archive footage of Savini in action. The Prowler isn't a classic of the genre at all (saying that most of the acting is wooden is saying it lightly) but it's the inventive effects work by one of the true masters of the genre that make the Prowler worth seeing.

Movie Review: this is one of the better slasher movies of the 80's
Summary: 4 Stars

no it's not a great film but from the bin of 80's slasher movies it is better than most. it starts at the end of world war II as a soldier gets a dear john letter and goes home and kills his girl and the boy she is making out with. flash forward to the 80's and after no school dance because of the killings they have another dance and guess who shows up? you got it the killer. tom sivini the guy behind friday the 13th's makeup does his goreyest here and this one has a creepy air about it that sets it apart from most. check it out as the transfer is great and the acting is better than most slasher movies.

Movie Review: Really 3 and a Half Stars.....
Summary: 4 Stars

Sometimes life sucks. But try living in the 50's and reciving a dear john letter. And then getting murdered. Crap like that is what makes up the small cult flick a geniune one. The story is about a girl and a soroty house that is going to a party! OH YEAH! DRUGS SEX AND ALCHOL!! LIFE IS GOOD! Anyways.... so the teens start being whorory and skanky and start to die! yay! So the best scene in the movie is when the survivor is running from the killer and when he stops on the stairs and looks at her i gt creeped out. I say it is a rent but what the hell do i know!!!
