Movie Reviews of The ProwlerMovie Review: Often Overlooked, But Once Seen...Not Forgotten Summary: 4 Stars
There was always something about "The Prowler" that made it stand out among the other 80's slashers. It's a fun and scary movie that features some of F/X maestro Tom Savini's most gruesome work. The small town setting, the sprawling mansion and dorm, the innovative backstory all create a great atmosphere. The actual menacing figure of the Prowler himself is just down right creepy, and the unique kills involving a pitchfork, a bayonette and other sharp instruments will keep horror fans happy. The DVD treatment is fantastic, and I really enjoyed Tom Savini's behind the scenes look at some of the great effects. If you are a fan of the horror genre then this movie is a must see. The only two drawbacks to the film; the Prowler looks menacing, but he doesn't instill that sense of dread Jason or Michael posess. And the musical score is kind of flat, not really helping to build suspense, just a trilling violin that kind of gets in the way. But those two minor complaints shouldn't keep you from enjoying a great old-school slasher. And by the way....why do so many people who have reviewed this movie feel the need to give away the entire story? I mean if you are not sure what "The Prowler" is about...just look at the DVD cover art....there aren't too many folks out there that will think this is a romantic comedy!! If you aren't familiar with this movie, don't read further reviews some of which contain quite a few spoilers!
Movie Review: Too memorable to be seemingly forgotten... Summary: 4 Stars
You don't hear a lot of people talking about this little gem...the circles I run with are some hardcore horror fans, but I'm surprised how many missed this film from the heyday of the 80s slasher craze...I guess with Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees hugging all the limelight, it just got lost in the shuffle.
Viewers who've seen as many horror flicks as I have will note several similarities to another oft-maligned slasher that came out about the same time: "My Bloody Valentine". These include the pretty well-developed historical backstory, the cinematography that made the small town atmospherically sinister, the "longtime cursed event that hasn't been held in years" motivation, and even the appearance of the antagonist was similar. However, this film stands on its own with some crafty twists, and stands even more on the shoulders of the great Tom Savini. Savini's effects in this film are among his best work, and gorehounds won't be disappointed.
I'm prejudiced; I LOVE these kind of movies; but I suspect if you're reading this, you probably do as well. If you know what to expect from slasher flicks from this era and enjoy them, and somehow you missed out on this one, you should definitely check this out.
I like the movie...you probably will too.
Movie Review: "Ummm, attention...ummm....there seems to be a prowler outside.... Summary: 4 Stars
Unfortunately for horror fans, we now live in the times of movies like Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Cry Wolf, When a Stranger Calls (the remake), and other horrible, bloodless, over-porduced fodder/garbage that Hollywood tries desperately to shove down our throats; passing these off as horror films.
Fortunately, we can always go back in time to the early 80's and pop in and old classic such as this fine film. I must say, when I went over to my friend's house to check out this flick, I was thuroughly impressed! I wasn't expecting much but I what I witnessed was a true, no-holds-barred slasher flick that fails to sugar coat. Unfortunately, films such of these now-a-days seem to be about as extinct as the dinosaurs. However, when this film came out, the makers made the wise decision to give the audience everything they want and more-nudity, a cool and sinister killer, a little bit of comedy, a bumbling cop that might as well work in Mayberry, and a bunch of very cool and creative as hell kill scenes! So come one Hollywood, check out the Prowler and learn a few things. Hopefully with the remake of The Hills Have Eyes, Hollywood will finally figure it out and get back to the classic days of true horror films.
Movie Review: A Slasher Flick With A Moral Summary: 4 Stars
The moral? Don't dump your boyfriend while he's overseas fighting the Germans. Well that's just what Rose does and now we got a bloodbath on our hands. The success of Friday The 13th gave us about 600 other slasher flicks in the early 80s. I'm a big fan of this all but forgotten subgenre. The Prowler stands out(to me anyway) as one of the best of those films. There's nothing new here-nothing you haven't seen in every other slasher flick. You'll figure out who the killer is a half hour into the film, but we're not really watching this movie for twists or suspense. But it does have a creepy looking killer and some of the bloodiest deaths for this kind of movie. Slasher flicks always tried to create gruesome and creative deaths. The Prowler's deaths aren't all that creative(lots of pitchfork and bayonette stabbings is all), but they are bloody. They look Fulci-esque. This also has one of the goofiest looking leading men I've ever seen. Directed by Joeseph Zito who brought us the timeless classics, Friday The 13th-The Final Chapter, Invasion USA and Missing In Action. With that said, you no longer have a reason not to own this. Get to the store. Chop chop.
Movie Review: A HEARTLESS DEAR JOHN LETTER RECEIVES A REPLY...... Summary: 4 Stars
.....with a PITCHFORK! When a lonely G.I. at the end of WW2 receives a Dear John letter from his faithless sweetheart back home."I'm young and I want to have fun" -he replies by impaling the new couple together with a pitchfork. 35 years later the small town of Avalon Bay is about to have the first graduation dance since the murder, the sheriff receives word that a maniac from the next town over has stabbed someone and removed their heart. What's a sheriff gonna do? This one goes fishing and leaves his young deputy in charge. This is a spoiler but anyone who has half a brain can spot the prowler.
Tom Savini produced the gory effects and delivers the goods, my favorite is the bayonet through the top of a head that exits the throat. There's also the ever popular exploding head by shotgun.
This film is a guilty pleasure from the 80's and for a low budget it has good production values and first rate cinematography for a graphic horror movie. As long as you don't mind figuring out the identity of the killer within the first ten minutes, the movie is good, clean, bloody fun.
