This is by far one of the best 80's horror films. One thing that really took me by surprise was the level of intensity that each of the killings goes to. These are some pretty hardcore deaths. I won't spoil any of them by giving you details, but just know that you will be shocked by what you see. I am a true horror movie freak, my film collection would make most video rental stores look extremely weak. Having said that, the ending in this movie was truly a surprise to me. I had very high expectations coming into this movie but they fell short to a very weak story. I really love slashers. They're my favorite of the horror genre and I do know they don't usually have the best stories anyway. But I need a little more story than gore for gore's sake. The Prowler's biggest strength is the death scenes. I mean it's been awhile since I seen something this brutal.
There isn't much suspense to it and the stalking scenes just seemed to be put together a bit too clumsy. And time was wasted on several filler scenes instead of either A)delivering a bit more story B)increasing the brutal body count. The movie just didn't set a good horror atmosphere to me.
This movie is more for diehard gore hounds. Don't come into this expecting Halloween because you'll be terribly disappointed. This is just a decent flick good to check out once in your life. I guess my problem is I'm spoiled by the original Halloween and Black Christmas.

One of the previous post mentioned that this film is often overlooked and has seldom been noticed or acknowledged in the world of horror films. They were definetly right.
I hadn't ever heard of this 1980 slasher flick until an AMC 100 Greatest Horror Films special that aired around Halloween of last year.
I put off buying this movie, mainly because it was unavailable to rent at my local video stores AND via netflix and blockbuster online...but I finally caved a week ago and shelled out the 15 buckeroos and had this bad boy sent out via amazon.
I must admit that I am slightly dissapointed. I don't know if I was simply not in a horror movie mood when I watched this, or if it truly is a poor slasher film...but the movie left me feeling underwhelmed.
I have to give Tom Savini credit for his incredible special effects. The gore is intense for it being made it 1980. Savini gives us shots of knives sawing into flesh and pitchforks prodding into body parts, that actually LOOK real. The pitchfork in the stomach looked pretty real, and i was grossed out at the pool scene. The blood is actually quite dark and realistic too, which is a pretty high feat.
The film's traditional heroine, while sweet and somewhat innocent, reminded me too much of Ginny from Friday The 13th Part 2, and I couldn't help but have the two characters overlapping in my mind throughout the movie.
There seemed to be a problem with the pacing of the film too. Something just felt OFF. The ending was lackluster and didn't impress me. I gotta give this movie 3 stars simply for Tom Savini's incredibly original and gore filled special effects. The rest of the movie was a total bummer for me though.

let me just say i love 80's slasher's. and this is one of the better ones hands down. they actually give you a cool little backstory here. and tom savini is at his best in this one. the shower scene was cool. i don't understand some of the bad reviews on this movie. there were a lot of these movies from the 80's that were really bad. and this is one of the best. also try slumber party massacre(the first one),my bloody valentine.
