Movie Review: THE PRINCIPAL Grades High Even 20 Years Later Summary: 4 Stars
The film centers upon a down-on-his-luck principal who has been hired to turn around a troubled school - which was the subject of many films at the time of its release. However, the trouble this school faced wasn't low math scores. Guns, gangs, rapists, and teen pregnancies were the issues that this principal faced. I remember thinking at the time that some of the scenes (though tension filled and dramatic) were a bit over-the-top. However, due to recent events on the news, the film doesn't seem that illogical after all.
The acting in the film is spectacular from all involved and there are just enough light moments to not make the movie entirely depressing. It's Jim Belushi, after all! Like DIGGSTOWN, the ending will unexpectedly grab you. Don't be surprised if you end up adding THE PRINCIPAL to your collection.
Movie Review: The Principal gets a bravo . . . a Rio Bravo! (me an idiot) Summary: 4 Stars
In this wonderful reworking of Hawks' Rio Bravo, Belushi takes on both the role of the sheriff and of the drunk. This is the best of all of the 1980s faculty vs. evil student movies. Belushi towers in this film, giving a wondeful leading man performance which should have forever brought him out from under his brother's shadow. The film, like a lot of Hawks films, has the main characters trapped in a building and having to fight their ways out. Morales, Gosset and Rae Dawn give strong support. Though director's Cain's Young Guns was his most popular film on the decade, this was clearly his best.
Movie Review: "Great 80's Drama!" Summary: 4 Stars
Jim Belushi, Louis Gossett Jr. and Rae Dawn Chong star in this 1987 drama.
A teacher is chosen to be principal of a drug-infested high school. I've
always liked this film and think it's one of Jim's best. This dvd has good
picture and sound, but only the trailer. I recommend this great 80's
drama.
