Movie Review: Those missing scenes

I originally saw the movie in the theater, and even early televisions runs were mostly intact. It floored me. I hope (beg/plead) that the DVD version restores the scene where Sidney meets Nan at the art film house. Not only is it important to set up the nature of the relationship but the send up of the art film is hilarious in itself. It is integrel to understanding and appreciating much of the later actions and exposes us to another interesting aspect of the 60's experience.
Should probably redub back in the terms FBI and CIA. I'm amazed they caved in so easily on the FBI 'request'.
The film works after all these years because of it's multi facited and prescient script. One central concept is that Sidney, though a pacifist, accepts Don's killing of an enemy agent as an interesting theoretical and relative moral issue. His thinking evolves a bit when HE becomes the target. Eventually he must also give up his pacifism to save the world, and learns the joy of killing. Sidney is us, the rational man, and it strikes home.
The very sophisticated views of institutions, such as corporate evil as the outcome of a banal selfrightious desire to serve the customer and cut costs, used for great dark comedy that feels truer every year. The anamatronic CEO is not only humorous but frightening as a concept that our lives are being manipulated by unkillable and uncomprehending forces. In comparison the agents of the cold war and MAD seem relatively benign and humane (consious of their humanity). And we finally realize that Canadians have ambitions too!
A precient film about technology, and san's warp drive, far ahead of the day's science fiction but wholely believeble, especially now that we're 'there'. Wouldn't you love to have one of those implants (Also note Gregory Peck's "The Chairman")? Think of the convienience! Spam delivered direct to the cerebral cortex!
The boat/car on the ship isn't something the made up for the film, they really did exist and you could buy them.
A film that defines the 60's and yet reaches out to us today (anyone spot the wire coming out of W's shoe?), and likely tomorrow. At the same time you laught you'll feel neurons growing new connections. Not what you usually expect from a Hollywood film.
Nothing touches it until the X-Files for matter-o-fact comedic paranoia. A must for study and a listing at the library of congress.
It would be very nice to hear from Mr. Flicker.
