Movie Reviews of The PirateMovie Review: A deliciously frothy late '40s musical Summary: 4 Stars
"The Pirate"
(MGM, 1948)
This is a delightfully frothy, silly, colorful musical, pairing up two legends of song and dance, Judy Garland and Gene Kelly. Kelly sparkles here as a raffish traveling actor whom Garland mistakes for a dreadful, rapacious pirate. Kelly literally dances circles around her, and has several dazzlingly athletic numbers, particularly his introductory song where he leaps all about the set, flirting with the women in a small port city. Garland's best numbers are her duet with Kelly on "Be A Clown" and the lusty song she sings while under hypnosis, playing a repressed "good girl" letting her libido loose in front of a crowded theater (all the while concsiously unaware of her surroundings...) This film apparently tanked at the box office when it first came out, but modern audiences will be quite pleased to see it now, particularly fans of these two brightly glowing stars. Movie Review: Minnelli's priceless masterpiece Summary: 4 Stars
A vivacious and energetic spectacular directed by musical director of Vincente Minnelli. Presented in his, own unique signature style of bright colours, upbeat melodious performances, and original costume designs. Minnelli's signature style of filmmaking enables him to embrace the ambience of each interrogational dance routine along with characters emotions.
Starring MGM heavyweight, Judy Garland alongside MGM's next rising star chorographer/dancer, Gene Kelly. Together their onscreen chemistry is brilliant and attractive where Kelly plays a wise-cracking vagabond who masquerades himself as the notorious pirate, Mack The Black in order to win the heart of his latest flame, (Garland). With hellcat hilarity, audacious stunts and romance, ill mostly remember this film as not only Gene Kelly's boost to stardom, but for the excellent onscreen team between Kelly and Garland.
Movie Review: Dance On Summary: 4 Stars
"The Pirate" is a remarkable movie staring Judy Garland and Gene Kelly. The story opens up with Judy Garland's character wanting to see the Caribbean before she is married off to the mayor of her small island town. In the Caribbean she meets Gene Kelly's character who is the main actor of a traveling show.
This movie is wonderful! There is a scene where Gene Kelly does this fantastic whip dance that transforms the background into a broadway show on your screen. It's truly a wonder to watch this actor move about the screen with so much ease. Judy Garland works in well as the lead character who throws a hilarious temper tantrum like a 5 year old.
I recommend that you should really give this movie a chance if you love pirates, dancing, singing, and plenty of comedy rolled in. Although, I wished for a slightly different ending, "The Pirate" is worth watching!
Movie Review: Musical put on Summary: 4 Stars
I just viewed the brand new DVD of the film, and it's great. Full color and full sound. The way to enjoy this odd movie is to understand its premise: it's a takeoff of sorts of a musical. Everything is unnatural; you never forget for a minute that you're on a sound stage and that the stars are there to entertain you. The Cole Porter music is pretty good, especially the unheralded "Love of My Life," sung by Garland late in the film. The dancing, choreographed largely by Kelly, is spectacular, especially the number with the Nicholas brothers. Just don't take the movie seriously (especially Garland's overacting and Kelly's hammy swagger), and you'll have a lot of fun.
Movie Review: Gene Kelly at his best Summary: 3 Stars
Simple story line to this movie starring Gene Kelly and Judy Garland. The sets are fun and some of the dance numbers may be ahead of their time. The best part is seeing Gene Kelly at his physical finest. He's fit and full of life. Judy Garland's health was suffering a bit while it was being made, but she managed to do an okay job. Over all it's worth a look.
