Movie Review: Great Fun!
Summary: 5 Stars
"The Pirate" was - as many reviewers have already established - a flop. As was "Bringing up Baby" when it was first shown to an audience. What both movies have in common is the fact that they were ahead of their times and as a result not very popular. But watch them now and you can see some of the best movies ever made.
"The Pirate" is a brilliant parody. Gene Kelly and Judy Garland make fun of the romantic couple in every classic Hollywood adventure movie a la "Captain Blood" etc. They're absolutely hilarious. As a team they were never better. But their solo performances are marvelous, too. Garland is in good voice for numbers like "Mack the Black", "Be a Clown" (with Kelly) or "Love of my Life". Kelly shines in elaborately choreographed numbers like his Pirate-Ballet and "Nina", one of Cole Porter's funniest songs.
The costumes and sets are simply wonderful to look at.
All in all this movie is very enjoyable - as a musical and as a parody. Highly recommended!

This movie is actually very, very good! It has a few twists in the plot that I didn't quite anticipate and all the acting, songs, and dances are excellent. Gene Kelly really shines as an actor who ends up posing as a pirate. And Judy Garland does marvelously as a well-to-do girl who has romanticized the life of a pirate. She's just beginning to show signs of age, but is still able to pull off the part in this movie. After reading more than 20 A+ reviews of this 56-year-old film, I wonder why WB Home Video is taking so long to bring it to DVD. They have released a bevy of inferior MGM musicals, but the best of the best is still on their wait list. I have a tape copied off TCM, but I long for the crisp beauty and color of a DVD version of this masterpiece. I just celebrated my 70th birthday. The Pirate starring Judy Garland and Gene Kelly is a wonderful musical and the singing and dancing by the two leads is excellent and I wonder why this movie hasn't been put on DVD yet and I think it's about time it got the DVD treatment! I have this movie on video but the tape is in really bad condition with several scenes that are so worn out they are unwatchable so a DVD would be very appreciated!Movie Review: An instant classic!

This movie was everything I could've asked for. Judy Garland and Gene Kelly make for an incredibly believable pair. The songs will get stuck in your head for days on end, which I think is a good thing. And the plot is just great with just the right amount of twists and turns. You'll be glad you bought this movie, I guarantee it!
