Movie Reviews of The Pirate MovieMovie Review: Underrated film-- Cult Classic today Summary: 5 Stars
Some of the online reviews bring to mind the snobbishness of the reviews in 1982. This film is brilliant in its silliness and slapstick humor. The thrust of the movie was not so much to "remake" Pirates of Penzance, but to update it and make the humor more accessible to a new group of people, as well as poking fun at those who believed that the now subtle humor of "Pirates of Penzance" was only for the "highbrow." Well, giving a bit of a background of Gilbert and Sullivan their humor at the time was aimed squarely at the rigidity and formality of the upper classes, and was considered slapstick, silly and highly accessible in its time. This movie pokes fun at the upperclasses, and was highly offensive to the reviewers of the time because of this. Sit back and enjoy it, but also realize that this movie does far more than simply make fun of Pirates of Penzance, Star Wars and Raiders.....
Movie Review: It's a SPOOF, people! Summary: 5 Stars
I can't understand why there's a soul from the 80s that doesn't enjoy this movie! If you're looking for a remake of The Pirates of Penzance then this is NOT your flick! This is a SPOOF. This is a hilarious spoof on The Pirates of Penzance and if you can't see that then you don't have a humorous bone in your body. If you want to get deeply involved in meaningful characters - this movie is not for you. If you want to enjoy goofiness and a lighthearted musical then this is most definitely for you! There are way too many people taking this movie way too seriously. I can't imagine that these folks have any fun in their lives b/c THIS is a GREAT movie. It's fun, lighthearted, goofy and it's a great spoof. Airplane is not a remake of Airport 75 - it's a spoof. This is not a remake of The Pirates of Penzance - it's a spoof. And it's a most enjoyable one!
Movie Review: Childhood favourite Summary: 5 Stars
This movie was released on DVD late last year in Australia and I immediately replaced my VHS version with the DVD. It's a no frills release and although the sound quality is a definite improvement some dialogue is still a little hard to hear. This movie is a family favourite, which I once watched six times in one day (once entirely in reverse), and my parents hired it regularly during the eighties. It is dated but still fabulous fun although younger audiences may miss some of the pop culture references ie Beach Party movies etc. Well worth purchasing for all fans of 80's cinema, Christopher Atkins and Australian scenery as it was filmed there with a mostly Aussie supporting cast. A must have DVD for me and one to be watched over and over as it can take a few viewings to get all of the jokes and background action.
Movie Review: This Movie Shaped My Childhood Summary: 5 Stars
The first time I saw this movie at the theater, it was for a matinee and when it was over I called my mom and told her not to pick me up because I was going to see it again...I watched all the showing that day and went back many times after. When it came out on "laser disk" my parents religiuosly rented it for me. I went through a phase of only dressing in white like Mabel and trust me that didn;t go over well in cold Minnesota. But to this day it is still my favortie movie. I have seen it well over a thousand times and my now husband who had never seen it whe nI finally let him "experience" it with me exclaimed " Wow! That really explains alot about you and sheds a whole new light on why I am the way I am." good or bad who know but I still love it. So keep pumpin and blowin and can't wait for the DVD.
Movie Review: A Blast from the Past Summary: 5 Stars
This movie came out in the early 1980's. It's a comedy remake of the Pirate's of Penzance. Swash Buckling Adventure broken up by 80's style rock remakes of classic Pirate of Penzance songs and a few new ones. The story begins in *Modern 80's* time and quickly turns into a Pirate Adventure dream sequence. There is a conflicting love interest between the Major General's youngest daughter Mabel, the the Pirate king's adopted son Frederic and a treasure that stands between them all.
To quote another famous movie "Does it got any sports in it?"
"Are you kidding? Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, True Love, miracles...."
It's a Fun watch for the family. And a real blast from the past for anyone who watched it back in the 1980's.
