Movie Review: one of the worst ever Summary: 1 StarsI had the clever idea to compare this version with the new movie.
What a mistake. The original pink panther is an absolute bore. There is really no story. Essentially, Peter Sellers spends much of the movie trying to get his wife in bed.
Major parts of the story make no sense. Don't waste your time.
Movie Review: A Little Pink In the Center Summary: 4 StarsBlake Edward's "The Pink Panther" is part crime caper, part slapstick comedy, all swingin' style.
For the uninitiated among you, the recognized cartoon character debuted in the animated credits to this movie. The actual "Pink Panther" the title refers to is a fictional diamond. The diamond is perfect except for a flaw shaped like a panther.
Like the Pink Panther diamond, there's a very notable flaw in this movie that keeps it from being perfect. It's a simple miscalculation on the filmmaker's part. The audience was expected to root for the wrong person.
The movie follows the adventure of a womanizing jewel thief, the very stylish David Niven, attempting to liberate Princess Dala, the very exotic and very sexy Claudia Cardinale, of the Pink Panther diamond. Niven is in turn pursued by accident-prone French detective Inspector Jacques Clouseau, played so masterfully by comedian Peter Sellers that he would return for four sequels.
The "root for the villain" approach the filmmakers were going for just doesn't work here. As charming, sophisticated, and likable David Niven is, his character's ability to seduce any woman and retain a respectable fa?ade isn't enough to make us like him. Instead, the audience naturally sympathizes with the underdog, Inspector Clouseau. We don't want to see him cheated on by his wife, who is secretly Niven's accomplice. We don't want to see him injure himself when his clumsiness should be causing his antagonist aggravation.
The movie still has its untouchable sense of style going for it. Henry Mancini's score, especially the famous theme music, is absolutely perfect. The opening animation that accompanies the credits, complete with the famous Pink Panther as well as images symbolic of Niven's and Sellers' characters, is definitely memorable. There are plenty of laughs, but in between there are many gags that fall flat, especially when Peter Sellers isn't on the screen. A good start for the series, but easily surpassed by almost any of the sequels.
Movie Review: First is always best Summary: 5 StarsThose reviewers who claim that the original movie is not as funny as the later Cleauseau movies from the 70's are both right and wrong at the same time. It really depends upon what type of sense of humor the viewer has. The original movie does not involve all the non-stop slapstick that the later films did. In fact, the first movie is not really an Inspector Cleauseau movie. The inspector has limited screen time, which is good, because although Seller's depiction of the inspector is at all times magnificient, like all good things he is best in small doses. The later movies strained to make him constantly funny for 100 minutes, whereas he is given short, but very funny scenes in the original movie.
The Pink Panther was actually meant to be, and is, a sophisticated sexual farce, European style. The humor is more verbal and situational, less physical. And it is true the movie is liesurely paced, but that makes it all the more enjoyable. The later movies are frantic in comparison, assualting the viewer instead of seducing him.
Don't get me wrong, I like the later Pink Panther movies, and Sellers is aways fun to watch even when the writing for his character is not up to par. But I think the first move is more of a thinking man's comedy, with classic lines like "I'll have your stripes!" (said to a policeman at a masqerade ball who is in a zebra costume), or the lengthy scene in which David Niven and Robert Wagner are both in gorilla costumes driving their getaway convertible sports cars through the Italian countryside. My own opinion is that this is much more humorous than "I am an officer of the loo".
But each to their own tastes.
Taking this movie on its own, and not comparing it to later Pink Panther films, I like it for it's sophistication, it's 60's style class, for Mancini's incomperabe music and for the beautiful Claudia Cardinale.
Movie Review: The Original and Endearing PINK PANTHER Summary: 5 StarsTHE PINK PANTHER is a film richly textured with well defined characters, plot, dialogue, production design and location photography. Niven, Sellers and Wagner give very fine performances which seem to remain fresh and vibrant to this day. Images of the Cortina ski lodge, the costume ball, the wild car chase and especially the animated Pink Panther are part of the iconic cinematic contribution from this film and Henry Mancini's theme and score are equally audibly iconic and indelible as well. This is an eternally endearing film and introduces Inspector Clouseau as Peter Sellers established that character for all future generations to come.
