Movie Reviews of The Pink PantherMovie Review: First is always best Summary: 5 Stars
Those reviewers who claim that the original movie is not as funny as the later Cleauseau movies from the 70's are both right and wrong at the same time. It really depends upon what type of sense of humor the viewer has. The original movie does not involve all the non-stop slapstick that the later films did. In fact, the first movie is not really an Inspector Cleauseau movie. The inspector has limited screen time, which is good, because although Seller's depiction of the inspector is at all times magnificient, like all good things he is best in small doses. The later movies strained to make him constantly funny for 100 minutes, whereas he is given short, but very funny scenes in the original movie.
The Pink Panther was actually meant to be, and is, a sophisticated sexual farce, European style. The humor is more verbal and situational, less physical. And it is true the movie is liesurely paced, but that makes it all the more enjoyable. The later movies are frantic in comparison, assualting the viewer instead of seducing him.
Don't get me wrong, I like the later Pink Panther movies, and Sellers is aways fun to watch even when the writing for his character is not up to par. But I think the first move is more of a thinking man's comedy, with classic lines like "I'll have your stripes!" (said to a policeman at a masqerade ball who is in a zebra costume), or the lengthy scene in which David Niven and Robert Wagner are both in gorilla costumes driving their getaway convertible sports cars through the Italian countryside. My own opinion is that this is much more humorous than "I am an officer of the loo".
But each to their own tastes.
Taking this movie on its own, and not comparing it to later Pink Panther films, I like it for it's sophistication, it's 60's style class, for Mancini's incomperabe music and for the beautiful Claudia Cardinale.
Movie Review: One of the must-see Classics! Summary: 5 Stars
Well, to chip in my two cents, I've been a Pink Panther / Shot in the Dark fan for years and late this year I decided it was time to start collecting my own copies. However, I ended up buying just this one film. I'm sure I will pick up the sequels and Shot in the Dark sooner or later, but there are just certain elements and qualities to this first film that I find myself drawn toward. I'm not sure whether it's the snowy European setting with skiing and fancy resort hotel (and it's interior scenes), the qualities in the main characters, the leading ladies and the light romances that take place, the pacing, the way Clouseau is portrayed in this film (in contrast to later films), or perhaps it's all of that and more. What I do know is that it's great fun and I enjoy every moment of it. Hopefully, if you haven't seen it yet, you will too.
I wanted to also add that I've seen a small bit of the re-make with Steve Martin. Small, because after three or four scenes, it became clear just how poorly he was in doing Clouseau's character. Initially, I thought it had to be some kind of joke or possibly a horrible mistake.
The original Pink Panther is and probably always will be one of a kind.
Movie Review: The era is securded Summary: 5 Stars
This was the first movie to be shot of the six films. Since this movie has barely any violence in it and only occasional very mild thematic elements in it. This movie should be fine for kids ages 10 to 21 years of age and older. The reasons why I recommend this for ten and up is because the gags used in this comedy movie are the old school slapstick gags that have been used since 1950s and earlier. These old school gags may be to confiscated for kids under the age of ten to understand. The other reasons why I recommend this movie for ages ten and up is there are a few brief scenes thrown into the movie occasionally with the use of Champaign and other alcoholic drinks.. In this movie Inspector Closeau is hot on the trail of a notorious criminal. known as the Phantom. Can the young detective catch this thief who has been dogging the police for twenty years? Find out in the hilarious funny conclusion.
Movie Review: Still the best Summary: 5 Stars
Imagine what it must have been like going to see "The Wizard of Oz" for the very _first_ time! And not knowing that it would switch to color! This is the feeling I get when watching the Pink Panther (or any other really good movie in a series for the very first time)! It's a totally new experience! The original always seems to be the best. This is true of the Peter Sellers PP series. Although the sequels were "good" it's not the same experience. Then there's the remakes. They are almost always universally abysmal (not always). This is also true of the remake of the PP series (Steve Martin). Fortunately I saw that movie for free. Worth every penny!
Movie Review: Awesome! Summary: 5 Stars
I think that this is the best Pink Panther film that I've seen. Although I've only seen this one, A Shot In The Dark, and The Pink Panther {2006}. This film has incredible slapstick comedy by Peter Sellers. Starring Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau, David Niven as Sir Charles Lytton, Robert Wagner as George Lytton, Capucine as Simone Clouseau, Brenda De Banzie as Angela Dunning, Colin Gordon as Tucker,Claudia Cardinale as Princess Dala, and The Pink Panther as himself. I can't wait to see the other ones. Well, that was my review.
