Movie Reviews of The Pink Panther [Blu-ray]

Movie Review: Blu-ray vs. DVD
Summary: 5 Stars

Another reviewer has correctly observed that the Blu-ray has been produced not in the expected 2:35.1 ratio, but 2:20.1. (The review at Bluray.com noted that the aspect was 2:20.1, so this was not a surprise to me.) I own both the DVD and, more recently, the Blu-ray versions of this wonderful film. Doing a random comparison of scenes, it is clear that the Blu-ray version has been cropped very slightly at the top and/or bottom and at the sides. I did not detect any vertical stretching (noted by the other reviewer)in the scenes I observed. The Blu-ray is a handsome step up from the DVD in quality. IMDB indicates that Pink Panther prints were produced in both 2:20.1 and 2:35.1 Perhaps MGM had a reason for using a 2:20.1 print for the Blu-ray. In any event, I don't believe that it affects any critical content and the images are not distorted. This great comedy looks better than ever on Blu-ray.

Movie Review: Blu ray is superb!!
Summary: 5 Stars

First off, this is not a comparison of the The Pink Panther with Peter Sellers versus the remake with Steve Martin. There is no comparison. One is classic comedy at its best -- the other a cheesy remake.
This blu-ray edition is superb. I judge my blu-ray discs with "Mamma Mia" as the standard of excellence. The color and clarity of the PP are first-class. Considering that the movie was shot in 1964 they have
done a marvelous job.

Movie Review: Great Blu-ray for this film classic!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I rented this Blu-ray and the colors, sharpness, and overall quality was superb! Very filmic! The sound was clear with some occasional distortion. However, this Technicolor/Technirama film makes me feel like I'm watching it in the 60's when projectors used carbon arcs, not like today with often dim theatre presentations. Superior Cinematography and locales BTW.

Movie Review: Great video, lousy audio
Summary: 4 Stars

I Bought this Blu-Ray from Amazon a while back. What a thrill it is to see this great film effort, with these actors, many of them long-gone, with such clarity! The picture is better than movie theater quality.
The audio is another matter. I can't fathom how some movies of this era were released with such poor audio. "Patton" would be another film that would fit in this category. Some studios must have had some really sub-standard mix studio monitoring systems. No wonder George Lucas got on his high horse about poor film audio in the mid seventies and started THX! Thank you George!
I have purchased several old movies from the 50's and 60's on DVD that were mastered and released on 35mm optical that sound great! Most Paramount and MGM pics from the 50 and 60s sound incredibly clean and smooth for mono optical, as do the Warner Bros films from the same era, though they do sizzle a bit from Warners' over-the-top e.q. to boost the highs. Disney's heavy boost in the 2khz-6khz range? We won't even go there! (Loved you anyway, Dis!)
If whoever mastered the "Pink Panther" Blu-Ray had paid as much attention to the audio quality as they did the video, the dialog intelligibility would be greatly improved and Mancini's score would really sing!

Movie Review: still a delight
Summary: 4 Stars

A comic gem, the best part of rewatching the first adventure of Inspector Clouseau is not just Peter Sellers but the absolute mastery shown by director Blake Edwards. Very very few comedies can use widescreen competently much less with finesse the way Edwards does here. No wonder they're still making spinoffs and sequels to it even now. Since I'm an Edwards and Sellers fanatic, I'm willing to pay $35 instead of $15 but that's probably too much for most anyone. That's a shame because the film looks smashing.
