Movie Reviews of The Picture of Dorian GrayMovie Review: A Classic!!!! Summary: 5 StarsA fantastic film. Hurd Hatfield is brilliant in the title role. WHY IS THERE NO DVD!?! This film is more than worthy of being cleaned up for a special edition release. ARE YOU LISTENING WARNERS!!
Movie Review: Why No DVD? Summary: 5 StarsThis version deserves to be on DVD! Where is it Warner Bros.? This movie is excellent!!! Like many of the other reviewers, I want to see this on DVD and while they're at it, go ahead and release "Kind Lady"(1951) and "Night must Fall"(1937) on DVD as well. Why do these films continue to be overlooked by the studios as obvious candidates for immediate DVD release??? Given the quality of the majority of DVD releases over the last few years, one might think that the major studios were at a loss as to where to find quality material to release. Well, these films - and others like them - have been long overdue for DVD!!! A word of advice to the studios; Stop twiddling your thumbs and release these films!!! -Thank you
Movie Review: the classic version of the story is the best Summary: 5 StarsDorian Gray is a beautiful (moreso than all the women in the film) young man who has his portrait painted. When he sees it he wishes with his whole heart that he could remain just as he is now.. beautiful, remote, elegant and untouched by time or the world and if only his portrait could do the aging for him. Well, Dorian makes the wish in the presence of an Egyptian statue of the goddess Basht and somehow his wish is granted.
This might not be such a bad thing but Dorian falls under the spell of Sir Henry, a shameless old rouge played with gusto by George Sanders. Sir Henry tells the young man to do as he pleases. Although Dorian's other good friend makes a several weak appeals for him to ingore Sir Henry the young man listens and learns too well.
Dorian gets a brief reprieve in the form of sweet innocent Sybil, played by Angela Lansbury but he blows it and causes her death. The nastiness of his behavior shows up on the portrait. Frightened Dorian hides it and goes on his merry way. The movie was made in 1945 so it was impossible to show all of his sins in detail but the writers were clever and adults understand euphemisms so the audience understands that Dorian is into some really bad stuff. There are men who get up and leave when he comes into a room. In one scene a wealthy young woman at a party catches sight of Dorian and her smile vanishes. She turns pale and looks down at her feet. In another scene the audience hears that a young male acquaintanc of Dorian's has committed suicide and another male friend has shocked everyone by abruptly leaving the country. Oh and Dorian sometimes spends weeks at a seedy "inn" (it's a brothel/opium den) down by the docks. You never see him do anything there except smirk and go upstairs but the audience of 1945 got it.
For 18 years Dorian Gray has been messing up lives and comes out untouched and looking literally like a choir boy. When the end finally comes and Mr. Gray gets whats coming to him it is extremely satisfying.
Movie Review: Wonderful adaptation Summary: 5 StarsExcellent adaptation of Oscar Wilde's novel. Not only an excellent reminder that you can hide what you are from others but never from yourself, but also that no matter how foul the life, redemption is still there for all who sincerely wish it. God stands with open arms for the pure AND the unpure who come to Him.
GREAT movie!
Movie Review: thought provoking and unforgettale Summary: 5 StarsI just saw this movie and it has now become one of my all time favorites, Hurd Hatfield gives an extraordinary performance (as does the entire cast)Hurd is so stiff and wooden and cold it gives you chills. The decayed portrait shown in color is shocking and startling at first view and I love the way he throws the knife time and time again before he commits the murder that's fine suspense. This movie makes you think about life, vanity and what is important in the long run. This character lost his soul because he sold it for youth it makes you think about how you yourself, are living and are you selling out what you believe in for something or someone, they don't make them like this anymore that's for sure and where is the DVD of this, why is there no DVD????!!!!
